If Brad Pitt/Johnny Depp/movie star du jour complimented a hot girl they wouldn't drop in value in her eyes, she'd be impressed with how down to earth they are in-person. Same concept applies.

I only have this problem when talking to 5s and 6s, or otherwise really young or boring people.

It's important to calibrate properly before you start DHVing like crazy. I've out-qualified myself before. Lots of young cute girls from the suburbs are really quite boring/dumb/vanilla and can't hang, so I always make it a point of getting a feel for where I'm at before I start dropping no-fooling DHVs if she's a 7 or less.
