I think I do better when going very casual, as well. It really depends on your "tribe" and the tribe of the girls you're going after. Some girls really like snappy dressers, some girls like laid back guys. I also live in a super laid back town...I would guess it is the most laid back town in America, if not the world. It's famous for it's laid back attitude. Flip flops and shorts and T-shirts are the wardrobe of almost everyone, male and female, nearly year round. At night, people, particularly girls, get a little more dressy (they put on actual shoes, for instance), but mostly it's still very casual.

I had really good luck with a weird red shirt I got at a punk rock show a few years back, and a pair of patchwork plaid shorts, and basic low top canvas shoes. I didn't even trim my beard of shave off the neck stubble that night. And, it was perhaps my best night out, so far, actually.

But, there are definitely crowds and definitely places where dressing really flashy would be a win. There's a PUA blog called The G Manifesto who claims custom Italian suits and fancy shoes and such are the shit for pickup. But, I'm absolutely certain that guy is a pathological liar, so I don't pay his advice or stories any attention. I don't know of any other PUA guys advocating super high end clothing.

I wouldn't sweat it. I've found I can pull off anything when I'm in the right state of mind. I'm a vegetarian and don't wear leather, so I wear plastic shoes when I need dressy shoes. I've had a girl call me out on it, with something like, "You mean your shoes are plastic?" and made a stinky face about it. I laughed it off with an, "What you talkin' about? I had to give $15 dollars for these shoes. Usually I don't like to pay more than $10", and before long she was leaning on me and giving tons of IOIs. I was at the event with a hotter girl (though she wasn't anywhere nearby when I was talking to this girl), and I wasn't interested in the shoe bitch, but I wanted to make sure I could turn it around. Later, just to confirm the hook was actually solidly set, I told her about my ten dollar pants. She laughed and continued giving IOIs. Mission accomplished. Even girls who like expensive clothes and are judging of cheap clothes can be turned around with a strong frame.

Just like guys who have boring or crappy jobs, if they're OK with it and can own it with no shame, then it isn't really a problem. But, if you're self-conscious, it will hurt your game and chase off women.

tl;dr: Your state of mind matters more than your clothes. If they make you feel good, they're a win, but if you don't care, girls generally won't.

I am a bit curious as to which cities both you and intjpua live in. Then again, I live in Los Angeles, which might be the most vanity obsessed city in America (with the possible exception of New York). New York and the Northeastern cities are a bit more fashion-conscious (West Coast is a bit more casual when it comes to business dress and the like), but LA is obviously image obsessed (going to the gym, as well as clothes). There's a reason there's an LA Fitness chain of gyms and not really a New York Fitness chain.

But I digress. I'd like to think I dress well (and enough people have told me I do to think I'm not completely sniffing my own ass) though I don't consider myself a flashy dresser. I don't go on MFA recommending that you get Brioni suits or that everyone get boat shoes, and I don't own much in the way of bling. Typically if I'm out, I'll wear something like a V-neck sweater, slim collared shirt, skinny tie, and slim jeans or slacks (nothing too skinny though, I won't try something my legs don't fit in), and some Sambas or something like that. If it's warm or sunny out, definitely not averse to wearing a cool T-shirt. But it sorta fits the crowd I typically hang with (show-going, art gallery hopping) and the girls I am after and fits my personality in general.

But I think for me, personally, it's a bit of a zen thing, a bit of a mindset thing. Some places are definitely more casual, and some guys mindset is so strong it can override a complete disregard of what they're wearing. Personally, I've taken the mindset that hey, if people are going to look at me anyway, I might as well give them something to look at. It's a relatively minor thing in my day, but I like having the feeling of being well put together. It's a self-respect thing. I know this is going to sound totally vain, but if people like looking at neat-looking or good-looking things in general, wouldn't it brighten their day just a bit to give them something neat to look at?

But definitely not just for expensive clothes in general. I've gotten some of my best compliments from things I found at a thrift store or $2 socks I found at Target.
