number 1 seemed pretty solid. jumping in the picture was a great move, and you probably had more confidence in this set because you had no interest in the girl.
If you had done the same thing with set 2 you would have done much better. It sounds like you opened them just like every other guy in the bar would, which means they probably shot their defenses way up.
I think you were there too long, even though the conversation was probably good if you kept talking for an hour and a half or so without intent of escalation. You were too available to them. Especially the fact that you were waiting for them at the bar, its like a puppy dog.
Also, if you didn't feel confident at that point, break away after a bit of conversation, and then come back to them later. You already have an in. You can go chat up some more people, get some social proof, then come back with more confidence.

Just saying "Hey guys, how's it going?" is fine for opening, as long as you follow with something interesting and have all the other stuff right (hard to fake indicators of confidence like body language, vocal tone and pace, eye contact, etc.). But, if you use an obvious pickup line, like "Come here often?" defenses go up.
Practice, and awareness, is the only way to get good at the markers of confidence. No matter how many "good" openers you memorize, your success will depend on getting enough practice and having a good enough attitude about the learning process to achieve actual confidence.

I like this as a more advanced move; delivered with a hint of irony it can actually develop nicely.

If they talked to you for more than an hour they were certainly open to some advances from you. Since you didn't initiate any type of attraction building aka "real pickup stuff" -- almost every girl will leave with her friend to "go to the bathroom".
Take the lesson about the awesome opening, great job, and good conversation it sounds like, just remember next time to do things that are attraction builders if you don't want it to fizzle out after an hour.

Thoughts? Kino more. Escalate faster and fluff and comfort zone will fall by the way. Nonetheless, Good first try, I havenae been doing pickup for too long, and one of the best things i've learned from lurking here is to incidentally touch your target.
