Strangely I get the opposite, I am more inclined to approach when I'm around friends just to show off in a way. In college most guys don't have the guts to do cold approaches.

Your friend's right. You should just go for it. I think you're feeling unnecessary pressure to want to impress you friends with your gaming skills. At the risk of maybe looking as if you have no game if you fail. Seriously, walking up to and talking to a woman is already courageous and displays alpha status. Just open normally. Your buddies might help you out even if you aren't struggling. If you fail, it doesn't matter, you have your buddies with you so you can just keep doing what you were already doing. Your friends might get a girl too if you opened a set. You have nothing to lose and so many advantages.

Here's some worst case scenarios. You fail and get shot down.

1- One or some of your buddies laugh about it. You know it's just joking around. So you don't take it seriously and laugh about it with them. They may also give a pointer because they had a more objective view on the scene.
2- You find out one or some of your friends are douchebags and undermine you for failing and so on. At least you had the guts to try when they didn't, no matter what they say. When you do pick up some other chick, you don't rub it in their faces, because let's face it, you're the better man. But you do let them know that you have game.

This pressure you're feeling, is something you put on yourself. Just do what you usually do. You're in a better situation.

I was walking home one night and these 3 guys behind me opened a 3-set just by having 1 guy simply say "Joe's." to which the girls quickly responded "No." The 3 guys laughed and one said "It was worth a try, Sam."

Aspire for that attitude with your friends. If you fail, your friends are there to laugh at you, support you, whatever you need. It's really good to just relax while you're gaming and look at everything objectively. Friends are just a good safety net.

I like to tease everyone. Sometimes at the bar I'll make eye contact with a HB and just mess with them all night. Pretend to walk over and open them, tease them with facial expressions, sometimes they even open me. Its fun for me because my friends are usually completely unaware and I don't care if anything happens because I'm there to hang out with them not sarge.

It's hard when you get direct pressure like that, and for me it's actually worse when it's "friendly" pressure. It's easier if they say something like "That girl's not gonna want to talk to you," and I say "Fuck you guys- watch this."

Generally though I just separate myself from my friends as often as possible. They're usually more laid-back though so they don't treat approaching like it's some kind of accomplishment. If you're with guys like that, it's just gonna be a bit harder.
