You seem to be having trouble making the leap from the unattractive girls... this is primarily because you see (visually) the leap.

Try the stepping stone approach. Gradually work your way up... start at the 5's and work your way up to the 9's.

Also helps when the unattractive girls tend to react more positively, which helps conversation and game flow a little easier. HB8+ can be more stoic sometimes, after having played the game before. This has been my experience anyways.

[EDIT] Just realized this completely contradicts OP. Sorry bout that. Guess I still need that epiphany.
