Smile and say something.

(IMO, screw the polite talk. It's sounds fake/rehearse/insincere.

Had a convo with a lady the other day and I ended it off with what you said. I instantly felt like a dweeb. It was not me at all, what a way to represent myself- especially after spending a good moment with her.)

I've been in this myself, except I ignored the cashier. But, what I would have done is called her on it. In my case, it was point blank clear she was interested- staring my way, even one time her friend was there and as I stepped in they started fidgeting, making looks at each other and me...just writing this makes me feel like I should've acted anyways- but fuck it.

Point is, say something, use the environment BUT try not to talk about how her work is e.g. "must have tons of endurance and patience just standing here all day, haha", that just invites small talk and meaningless polite convo. I'm not dismissing smalltalk and the likes right off the bat, but being that you're only going to be there for a few minutes, you need to hit her up hard and fast.

Like in my situation, it was pretty clear the girl liked me. So I'd just walk up to the register while she's checking my purchases and make a little comment about why she's staring at me often and whatnot.

You could also ask if she'd use her discount card for you, smile and then build it from there.

She also could've just been polite, but I wasn't there, you were.

Good luck on your next trip, and don't just go back for candy, unless you've got a sweet tooth (<- something else you could say).

You have to break out of the customer-cashier conversation autopilot fast in this situation. Make eye contact and smile and then JUST GO FOR IT. "How's your day going? What time do you get out? I think you're cute we should hang out sometime give me your number". You have nothing to lose.

I once went through a line and noticed the cashier girl was cute and she was smiling and checking me out. I felt a vibe but did nothing. I was walking out and said "FUCK IT". I went back in her line waited my turn with NOTHING to buy and said "I don't have anything to buy and I never do this but you're cute" she says "I think you're cute too" and I just asked for her number. She gave it to me. Nothing came of it but I don't have to kick myself over not doing anything there and I don't have to wonder what might have been. Sometimes you just have to man up and say what's on your mind.

Go back in there when the store isn't busy and ask her a question about some randomly-selected item you pick up: "Have you tried this candy? Is it any good?" and see if you can get a conversation going.

My go-to line right now for when I have nothing else to go on is "How's your day going?" Usually gives me something to relate to, then I introduce myself and go from there.

thanks a lot guys, this stuff is really helpful. I'm now anticipating my next trip to the store. These comments seem like a great starting point, I just gotta grow a pair and go for it.
