I was at a local restaurant with a female friend this weekend where I had been once before. The first time I had some fun bantering and smiling going on with a lovely waitress, and now when I was back there we had a wee bit of 'chemistry' again.

I hate 'direct' approaches, particularly on staff people whose job is basically to be friendly to everybody, and the idea of asking her number scared me shitless. But when I told my friend I really dug her she told me to go for it, and so I said fuck it to myself, motioned her over to our table, and used the following line:

Hey, my friend here says I should ask your number. [grin] So, euhm, yeah, can I have your number?

And she happily gave it! In hindsight, that line was pretty great:

  • I had a bit of an 'alibi' so it somehow felt a lot less scary.
  • It communicates that she was not my g/f, and moreover girls that are not even my g/f still want to go out with me! Social proof and all that.

So there. I texted her the day after and she didn't reply yet, so not sure if it'll go anywhere. But whatever, #close from staff = instant feel-good in my book!
