You were an asshole and it worked. I once acted like an asshole towards some girl just by pure accident and she was instantly into me. It works all the time and I can't explain it (yet). Probably something to do with showing her that you're better than her.

Unless you seem into the girl on some level, usually making fun of her isn't going to end well. Something like, "you're pretty cute, too bad you wear beige shorts. I bet you could rock some (whatever shorts you're into)." will usually be a good move if the girl is on a high horse and thinks she is out of your league or something...

Just blatantly making fun of her or saying stuff like, "you're boring, I don't like you" is 9 out of 10 going to push her away. You want to seem like you have high standards and just don't accept whatever girl talks to you, but are still willing to entertain the idea. From your description it sounds like you were pushing her away and she just kept coming back, that is rare.
