Seddit, Let's talk fraternities...

Junior in college here at a school with a very big Greek life.

Im not in any fraternity, though I have nothing against them and came very close to pledging when I was a freshman. That being said, I personally would advise against joining a "lower tier" fraternity... especially a new one that presumably doesn't have a house.

You probably won't have any socials with any moderately big sororities. Also, whether you like it or not... pretty much everyone in the greek community (and many who aren't greek) are going to think less of you for being in a "bottom tier" frat. Some girls will immediately stop talking to you when you tell them what fraternity you are in (though i suppose some will do that if you are in no fraternity at all).

Basically what I'm saying is--being in a bottom tier frat places you lower on the social ladder than being a GDI... at least at my school... If you want to get involved you should join clubs... get involved... do relay for life... etc.

Depends. There is a social ladder in the Greek system. But, if it's about hooking up with girls, it doesn't matter. Sorostitutes love to have fun, doesn't matter what fraternity you are in.

I wouldn't even join one of the upper tier fraternities, to be honest. In one sense, you broaden your social life because you're house is going to be a place to meet a ton of underage girls who cannot get in to the bars yet. You're also going to meet a ton of girls who are in sororities that are tied to your fraternity. On the other hand, you limit your opportunity for growth and make friends in a social aspect if you choose to not go Greek.

Personally speaking, I too nearly joined a fraternity when I was in college, but I wouldn't trade anything in the world for that rundown, piece-of-shit house that my friends and I had Sophomore through Senior year. We had to learn to survive as poor college students, and we also had to hone our social skills. When you live on Frat Row, your house is basically a flame to a bunch of 18/19 year old girls. They know where the party is, and it's easy to find. When you live in a house of your own, you have to make more friends in classes, you have to meet more people at popular campus locations, and you have to learn that some of the coolest people you meet in college are the ones that you only met because you broadened your horizons and went outside your comfort level. Setting up a great party depends entirely on the social network you create when you choose to not go Greek.

Not bashing the Greek system at all, it's just I subjectively feel that there is more to be gained from being a GDI.
