My guess is that the guy was blatant about it and that usually causes a lot of butthurt. The typical advice applies here. Just be social, talk to everyone. Then be on the lookout for girls showing interest. How receptive are they to you entering their personal space, the grazes of their upper arms, your high fives, etc. When you get a girl that is receptive, you then want to isolate.

It really is that easy. You can flirt and talk with girls without seeming like you are trying to fuck them to outside observers. Also, this approach will make you much more successful because the other approach makes willing girls seems like sluts to those who observe and girls try to avoid that.

Yeah at a party you can't go around trying to hook up with every girl there. Everybody notices and will all be making comments about it to there friends. You just have to be friendly from the get go and talk to guys and girls the same way and just kind of hang out and have fun. Then when you have a good connection with someone, you can try to pick her up. But you can't look creepy by going around and hitting on every girl there.

This is what Indirect game is all about, how to save face in the even she's taken/not attracted to you etc. In that case the interaction wont go anywhere on that level, and you were just having a good conversation.

Then you can clarify it later on, by asking specific questions without sounding like you have an agenda. You're just there to meet people and enjoy the party.

an idea might be to open som all male sets beforehand it can let you slip into frame and warm up while simultaneously generating social proof and if they know more of the girls than you then you can ask them whos single or not this way even if you hit on a girl and shes taken the fact that youve opened a few guy sets will make you seem cool and social and not just a "creep" trying to get laid

You should talk to everyone. You gain social value when you do this, not lose it (unless you're acting needy).

In a college situation, how can you game without seeming like a douchebag PUA and yet not lose opportunities like I did?

You have to get a feel for how much the friends will allow. Sometimes if you go for the F-close in the bathroom nobody will stop you, and on the flip side sometimes you have to be covert about even #-closing! Of course the better your game is, the better your chances.

Just calibrate in the moment for that stuff.

I would also work in some questions to girls that are giving you IOIs. For example, if she talks about something she's proud of you could say "Wow, I bet your boyfriend's also proud of you too." If she doesn't have one, she'll say "I don't have a boyfriend." Alternatively, simply asking about what they've done that day or what are their hobbies can be great transitions to asking them what/how their boyfriends think about their activities/hobbies. "Wow, you spend 10 hours studying a day?!...I bet your boyfriend's disappointed you've been neglecting him (Be sure to say it in a sarcastic and playful manner)"
