I am very new to this. And that means i'm incredibly confused on how to open correctly, how to have conversations going, etc. What i'm looking for is opinions on what I did wrong, and what would you do in that position.

So this is about the 7th week in class, and up to this point I haven't been social at all with girls. This specific class, i've only attended like 20% of the time (fuck me). Ten minutes before class starts theres a group of ~6 people talking about random shit, this girl is talking too. We're all making jokes, I make some, she laughs and blah blah. I haven't talked to this girl before.

We walk in and she sits in the corner, where here usual seat is, I assume. I sit right behind her (side seat was occupied).

I tap/rub her shoulder to get attention, and she looks at me. I say

"I haven't been in this class basically all year, how fucked am I?"

---"Very fucked."

"I'm pretty good with <class subject> though, it shouldn't be too hard"

---"This is how fucked you are" She opens her notebook and starts showing me the copious amount of notes and stuff.

"Damn, you're organized"

At this point, the professor starts lecturing, and we stop talking until the end of class. She's twirling her hair. Once in a while she looks back at me and I smile. She's also asking the dude next to her for some help on clarifying something the professor said.

We're about to leave, I walk past her (while she's still sitting down) I give her arm a light squeeze and say "Thanks for telling me i'm fucked ;) i'll see you next class" she smiles and sais bye.
