"Hey, I really like speaking with you but I have to go; give me your number so we can keep this going."
Or you can do the more bold thing and straight ask her out: "Sorry, I have to go but I want to continue our talk over a drink sometime, maybe next week. Write your number down."
Never ask them for their numbers. Always tell them you want their number, then hand them your phone. I get rejected far less when my phone is already out and it's staring the girl in the face.
Never be scared of rejection. It happens to everyone. Shrug it off and move on.

Nice. So you think it'd work for smaller conversations? Two of the girls work a register and I'd see them for maybe 30 secs and also there's a chance of people being behind me in line.

Go in the store early or late in the day?

This won't take more than a few seconds. As long there isn't a long line of people behind you they probably won't mind. This happened to me actually. I was hitting on this girl who works at starbucks and there was a couple behind me in line. I asked her for her number, unfortunately she had a bf but the couple behind me didn't mind and in fact laughed at the cheesy joke I used to ask for her number.
I really think the fear of asking for numbers is like approach anxiety - the only way to get over it is to keep doing it. I often ask girls for numbers even when I don't want them, just to make sure Im never afraid to ask.
Here's the thing: you don't need to worry about getting rejected. If the girl doesn't want to give you her number, she will either give you a fake number or say she has a boyfriend. They will very rarely say no.

Well that's my point. I never would ask a girl for her number in front of other customers. Also, that's a pretty negative response. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it. It's just that I can't tell if you're being negative or realistic with the "fake number" and "ignoring".
On the other hand, I agree with you about numbers not being a trophy and needing a connection. It's just harder with girls who you only see at a place like a store. School or neighbor? Sure, you'll see them pretty often but girls like this, it's pretty uncommon and I'd hate to just say "well I don't know her so I might as well not try at all". That's how I treat a number. As a mode of communication. If we don't click then we stop texting/calling each other. I don't know. Maybe I'm just seeing this from another perspective. Thanks again though.

I'll wait until I've managed to create a high point in the interaction. Where it feels like it's just us, and there's a fun, somewhat sexy vibe between us (in night game a very sexy vibe). The reason this is when I ask for the number is because I'd like to see her again so much, that I'm confident in saying I want to, I feel I NEED to.
So shortly after this first little mutual feeling of attraction and connection, I'll say "We should go out sometime." Possibly with an 'I think' before, possibly with a 'what do you say?' after. But if it's possible I like to just make it a declaration, it's just more dominant. And again I'm confident enough to be like that because I'm in a moment where I REALLY want her.
When she says yes (yay), I'll take out my phone, and there's really not much game strategy going on at this point, I might just open the dial pad and hand her the phone, I might stand to her side and ask for her to say the digits and whats her last name. It's not game at all really it's just collecting the number I don't overthink it.
So after that I'll continue to communicate with her, I think it helps to stop flakes. I just feel like she's more likely to remember me if the last thing I do is kiss her,or make her laugh... than if the last thing I do is hit a 'save' button. I prefer not to do an "I have to go" close for this reason, but sometimes you have to actually leave and I'll employ them there.

This is a really good response. I think I might wait and just try to shop at their respective stores more often and get to know them. The only problem is the girl at bath and body works. I don't shop there and I can't go there multiple times. How would I do that? Maybe just go in to smell candles? The girls there usually do that. Get you to sniff many candles and hopefully you'll buy one.

This described scenario is what the opinion opener was born for. " Which one do you think my apartment should smell like, like if you walked into a house after a date which scent would be the best?"... " you think I'm feminine enough to breath lavender 24/7?, is that the kind of guy you'd want.."
or however it goes I just came up with that little play now, but, you get the idea.

Keep rehearsing 'whats your number?'. Rehearse it all the time. Write it down 100 times. Keep doing this.
Why:?
When we are nervous our brain tends to use the most rehearsed information in our mind. The last thing it is going to use is something you just read online. So even if you're nervous, you will be able to pull this off.
