How can I overcome my social anxiety and make more friends?

Stop trying to overcome the anxiety.

Accept that anxiety will be there.

Learn to sit with that anxiety and proceed anyway.

Trying to eliminate it only makes it harder.

Accepting it takes its power away.

Well, my friend is a clinical psycho(one of them). And she told me that to get over most problems such as social anxiety you have to essentially (she described it differently) re-frame it.

"Oh god i'm going to be going to this party where I don't know anybody... what if they don't like me? What if I annoy them or fuck up conversation?" etc.

Move this to:

"Oh i'm going to a party where i don't know anybody. That means i'll get to meet a whole bunch of new people. I'll probably even find a few that I get on well with and have some similar interests and get some new friends."

If you cant do that - then do what I do when it comes to my 12-20hr weeks of training for a fight.

"I dont care how you feel, mother fucker, you need this; you're going." Take the emotion out of it, take all feelz out of it, you made an intellectual decision and you will do it.

If you can't do that try a bit smaller, if you just bitch out of everything and essentially refuse to try it - then good luck because nobody else can help.

Look, I can't tell you how to fix this because I don't think there a sure fix for it. You were born that way, instead of trying to fix it, just embrace it. There a plenty of people like you. Yeah I can be lonely sometimes but look on the bright side, you have friends!

I can be really awkward around new people and it's definitely something that I'm trying to fix.

I can say that what has helped me a lot has been pushing myself into new situations (where I have to interact with new people). I recently started a new job in a field that I'm not used to do - it was very scary at first, but I'm slowly learning to open up more and am feeling more confident as a result.
