What in god's name do are you supposed to do and talk about on a first date to get a girl coming back for more?

I typically go for drinks and try to bounce venues at least once, and try to get the girl to talk about herself and stuff she's interested in. This approach has been a dismal failure for me, so I don't know if it's just bad luck or the type of girls I'm attracting, but honestly if you have any actionable first date advice it would be very much appreciated.

The majority of PUAs with blogs and stuff seem to be very successful at going out and getting laid.

Why should someone looking for a relationship listen to them? These are people who don't have long term relationships with women. What makes their advice universal?

(this isn't a question I personally have, but I think it is a good one that can lead to interesting discussion points)
