How can I describe my job (IT) in a fun way that makes it easier for her to ask questions?

Why is this an issue? Why are you talking about your job to women? Just ask her if she's heard of "the cloud" and say you do "that shit." Move on. Change topics. I'm sure you don't talk about a number of mundane things you do in life, focus your conversation on topics that are fun and matter to you.

A lot of the IT clients or researchers I have can talk about the end product or company as is benefits society.

I had one whose work (or company) helped with satellites and I had him use "Wouldn't it suck if everyone's cell phones failed at once?" This can work for nonprofit, government, or even for profit companies missions, depending. You are also the person that allows other people to do their work and the company to achieve its mission.

Also, you can always change the subject to your ambitions, passions, or hobbies quickly.

You can also make a joke about how a computer (ie run by garden gnomes, but smaller) or the cloud ie troubleshooting as storm chasing) works.

Remember, that you are the man and are supposed to lead (including the convo)!

Really all you need is something that engages her. Better to tell her an outrageous lie like you drive a garbage truck (as long as you don't look like a garbageman) than a boring truth.

But you can't avoid the truth eventually. What you need is a "persona." We had this come up before in seddit, one guy said he was a boring engineering student. I asked him what was his specialty, he said aerospace. I said, you're not a boring student, you're Jet Man. You're learning to build the jets of the 21st Century, designing advanced flight systems that will defend the Free World.

Think like that. You don't have to actually BE that person. You just need to be that persona. It can be an aspiration, it's in your future even if it seems like a distant future.

I work in IT doing mostly network support and when I explain what my job entails to women, they typically have no desire to continue taking interest on the topic.

Here's the thing: your focus is kind of in the wrong place.

The goal in conversation is not to how to get her to talk about you. The goal is making a connection. It's about exploring both of you.

If you push her to talk about your job, or about you in general, you're going to kill the conversation.

What's a good way to transform my job description so that she can laugh at my explanation and maybe take more interest since she doesn't need the precise technical knowledge/terms to relate?

The question is how to get her to open up. If you get her to open up, she'll be more interested in you, in turn.

You do that by listening to her, actively. And some good follow-up questions include getting at her emotions and motivations for things.

You don't, if you want to talk about work find one of your geeky male friends. Unless she asks you, do mention your work. If she keeps on asking it means she is a gold digger. Again not really a problem.
