Fear of interview mode messed me up?

First of all, good for you for getting out there and approaching. Thats one of the biggest steps.

Second self awareness. You're already farther along than most because you are self aware and you understand that the interaction did not go as smoothly as it could have.

All in all, interview mode is bad only if you are asking the questions for the wrong reason: that is just to ask in hopes she spits something interesting your way. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with asking a seemingly boring question if it's something you are actually interested in or more importantly, if you realize she is passionate about whatever it is.

I would think of a few fallback questions that would be good, but make sure they are not too specific.

For instance, you wouldn't want to have "what's your favorite childhood memory?" as a backup because that's a question that would require more rapport and previous conversation. You wouldn't ask someone you just met that question.

You could however ask "okay so my friend over there has really bad hiccups, what do you usually do to get rid of hiccups?"

That question is non-threatening, it lets her share something that she normally does, and if she's a talkative girl she may even throw in a personal story of when she had hiccups.

Your friend may not actually have hiccups, but she might have an interesting method to get rid of them that you could talk about that could lead to you asking more about her as a person.

My only other piece of advice is to listen. Listen listen listen. A lot of times girls will share one piece of info that they want you to ask about, but won't talk about it unless you decide to go there. Conversations can take many different paths depending on the questions you ask.

So continuing with the above example, if she tells you she usually just holds her breathe, you could ask her where she learned that or if it's an odd method you could playfully ask "where did you grow up? I've never heard of anyone doing that."

Girls love to talk about themselves. So if you are genuinely interested in talking to her and she sees that, she will most likely reciprocate (as long as she doesn't have a stick up her ass). Just keep a positive and playful attitude and tease her a bit throughout the convo.

Last note, clearly she wanted to keep talking to you because she asked you a question in the end so if not asking a follow up question works for you, continue to do that. The stuff I posted has worked for me, but in the end you have to do whatever works for you.

If someone wants to talk with you, you won't need to ask many questions. I forget the title, but I read a book that broke down conversation into inquiries and inspirations, inspiration being something you say that inspires someone to want to respond even without a question.

Inquiries should be used to start a conversation, but if a conversation goes well it should sustain on mostly inspirations. Asking questions to have her expand on something she said is fine, but if you're constantly having to generate new topics of conversation with questions that's a sign that she's probably not that into you or you need to be better at starting interesting and fun conversations.
