Watch funny TV shows and take comedy workshops, improv classes, etc. You'll get a feel for how humor works. Every joke essentially boils down to setting up or implying an expectation, and then shattering it.

Not trying to sound like an asshole but having friends helps. You build a natural rapport with them in an environment that is welcoming and accepting. Little by little you begin expanding outward and just being less introverted and kind of developing your own sense of humor and delivery. I get told quite a bit that my delivery of things is funny because I'll say something ridiculous and not laugh or change expressions afterwards, it's not on purpose it's just kind of how I am at times but I've rolled with it.

Also some of the responses here read like as if you were a soulless robot trying to integrate with humans and it's kind of funny. "Study human emotion. Mimic funny man on TV. Profit"

Understand that the best way to make people laugh in a good way is to tell stories that have a funny component. It's much better than jokes for connecting to people.

I naturally like to liven up a social situation by saying something funny through either sarcasm, observational commentary, or ridiculous exaggeration. I'm not a comedian so it's not like people are busting a gut laughing, but it helps when you say things with confidence. Sure, there are times when it's funny in my head and the joke just doesn't go over or your peers just don't have the background knowledge to get it. Whatever. Make fun of the fact that it didn't go over and move on.

A quick wit is something that is hard to have if you don't have it naturally, but it can be learned slowly. However, being a good story teller can be learned faster because it's something you've already experienced. Everyone has experienced awkward situations and I always listen with amusement when someone puts themselves out there and tells me about them. When someone tells a fail story with confidence, no one will make fun of you for it; they will like you for it. Don't be too self deprecating, but do own it like it was just another life experience.

I'm told regurarly that I have a lot of humor.

In my experience the most important part of humor is being able to make fun of yourself. Once you show others that you make fun of yourself and don't take yourself to seriously, they will occasionally make fun of you to (friendly banter). That allows you to make fun of them as well, basically teasing.

If it something most comedians have in common it's their ability to make fun of themselves.

I browse: https://www.reddit.com/r/Jokes/ That helps to frame myself into a humorous self. Some jokes don't need to be on the spot either, just refer back to jokes you've heard or situations you deem funny (need storytelling skills).. say something like "it reminds me of etc etc.."
