Sounds to me like you were more concerned with being nervous, sounding silly, not getting words in, not being as cool as someone, etc etc.
Think about the conversation, if nothing really interesting is being said, then don't talk. If something could be more interesting another way, then speak up. If you're attentive and quiet, people will ask your opinion, but you've got to be attentive. You don't have to dominate a conversation to be cool, funny, or interesting. As a matter of fact, dumb people will usually lead the conversation for you, and that's perfect.

How is that perfect though? I mean, I can feel if stupid people are leading the convos, but even though I try to speak up and bring my opinion in, I often feel intimidated by those people, because they are just way better than me at keeping a conversation up.

Comparing yourself to everyone around you isn't going to work if you're not equipped to be fair to yourself. So either don't do it, or be fair when you do.
Feeling intimidated is fine, that's fair, but saying you're not good enough to keep the conversation up COMPARED TO ANOTHER PERSON isn't true, or fair. You could say your quality of conversation isn't up to theirs, but that's just a value judgement, and again not fair to you.

I'm also trying meditation right now, and it seems like both game and meditation are all about "don't judge yourself or others / just be present".
Even though I'm working on it and give less fucks, I just know myself and my ability to have a conversation and it sucks in groups of people I don't know too much. How can I lay off those judging thoughts? And how would it help me?
[–]ImJustSo 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Well, judgemental thoughts just create a filter for yourself and for others. You constantly size up your next interaction based on previous judgements. It's a prison that doesn't allow you to think and act freely.
You judge yourself on things in the past, so even if that same thing won't be repeated, you act as if it will. And so, you just avoid that thing.
Well, what if you didn't have that limiting thought in the first place?
[–]GeeEddy 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So what you are saying is I should treat every conversation like a new experience where I can prove myself/set new ground instead of heading into every conversation with thoughts of previous conversations?
[–]ImJustSo 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, minus that other stuff.
Edit: Mostly it just wouldn't occur, as you move into a less judgemental mindset. Acceptance is difficult, but eventually experiences just wash over you like you're sand, instead of crashing into you like you're a breaker wall.

how do i avoid the fear of being laughed at?
You know that advice people give when someone else is way up high? Don't look down?
Same concept, you shouldn't be looking down.
[–]ImJustSo 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Not exactly, there's thoughts that exist, that are avoidable, it's just difficult.
If you're driving in a car and there's a cliff to one side and fast oncoming traffic to the other side, it's easy to slip into the morbid, consider all the terrible possibilities that may happen.
It's difficult to keep your eyes straight ahead, to think of only going straight down the road, nor even considering the dangers. That's what needs to be done though, you have to focus on the road, because that's your path. The shit on both sides that can happen are fine. There's always the road. Keep focusing on the road. If you start veering to either side, it's fine, the road is where you want to be, focus on the road. Focus on the road, and drive by the scary shit.
Then laugh, too. You may not think what you said is as funny as they do, but you can sure think that the situation you've created for yourself is pretty hilarious. Look dude, the most attractive people to me, to you, and to everyone else are the ones that go through shit we think is impossible, and they come out the other side like, "Ha, did you see that? Jeez."
Use my analogy from earlier. Imagine a guy that keeps his eyes on the road at all times. Even when he hits black ice, even when a drunk driver plows into his oncoming lane, even when he falls asleep at the wheel and flies off the cliff. Imagine a guy that somehow keeps focused through it all and just keeps going back to the road, keeps on ignoring all the negative things that happened to him on that road. Only focusing on where he's going next.
Can you fuckin imagine how bad ass that fucking guy is? Shit, I've created a legend in my mind, that's for sure.
That's the guy I want to be, I don't know about you. I wanna be fuckin awesome. I've been laughed at. Actually, I'm pretty sure I got laughed at earlier by a girl, like actual ridicule. Welp, I'm still alive! Still gonna be keeping my eyes on the road. Yeah, cliffs and traffic are there, but....so is the road.
Edit: gonna share the ridiculous story about the girl.
I see a mother come to my work place to drop her children off. I greeted her. She returned to go to the gym next door. She was wearing burgundy pants and a yellow cardigan.
Burgundy pants/yellow cardigan walks by again, I say welcome back.
Burgundy pants/yellow cardigan walks by again, I say have a nice day.
Burgundy pants/yellow cardigan....walks by again to leave again. That's weird, she already left. I say, "Have a nice day AGAIN! You finally outta here this time?"
She's totally fucking confused. I'm confused. She says, "I wasn't in here that long!" I explain I've seen her a bunch that day....with her kid earlier and everything!
She looks at me like I have the plague, laughs at me like I have toilet paper sticking out of my pants, and says goodbye like I'm the scum of the earth.
And so then Burgundy pants/yellow cardigan comes back and she says, "Hello again! Haha! Now I gotta pick up the kiddo!"
Holy fucking shit? It was two women! How fucking embarrassing, Jesus Christ I am so, so dumb. They look so similar!
But, whatever. Not going dwell on it, not going to think about it anymore, and looking back on it....that is fucking hilarious. I'm so dumb. Lol

I used to be the exact same way. The answer is to tackle whatever the source of this nervousness is head on. They make you nervous? Throw yourself into that situation. You're like a character that needs experience points, and the only way to break through and gain confidence is to face your social fears head on. BE YOU. Not some cheap knock off version trying to impress them. And keep in mind, in the end who really gives a fuck what anyone thinks but you; at the end of the day it's you who has to live with yourself. So be laid back, natural, chill =) you got this.
[–]DirkDieGurke 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think I have read that if you're in a social situation where someone else is more "dominant" or popular per se', then treat them with interest, and that person will be drawn to you which in return gives you some social value as a result.
[–]flyingkiwi46 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sometimes less is more. you just need to sit back and listen to what people are talking about. Don't try too hard to be interesting will look off. Instead try to be "chill" speak when you have something worth saying. Keep this rule in general be interested in w.e people are talking about. When you're interested in what they're saying the convo has alot more value. Key words here is listen and actually be interested
[–]NoloRadio 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
All of the advice in here to listen more, don't go in with preconceived notions of inferiority, etc, is good. Two more points:
Consider if you're actually interested in the subject at hand. Sometimes (and I've definitely had this problem) when the topic at hand doesn't interest us, we say boring or low-status things just to relate to the topic. In doing so, we often conform to the tone set by the leaders of the conversation, who often chose that topic because it makes them look good or because they have a lot of things to say about it. If you have less confidence in yourself, you will often try to 'prove' yourself in conversation by chiming in with any anecdote or thought you might have on the given topic, instead of being more confident and fluid and transitioning the conversation to a subject where you have more status and interest. Guys with low social confidence and understanding of hierarchies/competition are often really bad at verbal transitions, which is why you should study them.
While it's fine to play it cool rather than trying to say things that aren't entertaining or interesting, watch out for a dynamic where the people leading the conversation just roll right over you because you're not speaking enough. This is related to the above problem: If you've been stuck in a conversation where you have nothing to contribute for too long, and haven't managed to bring it around to something that does interest you, your efforts to do so are going to look clumsy and jarring (especially if the other people involved really are interested in the subject at hand).

The biggest thing I'm realising is really listen. Practice listening. Evaluate any statement you make before you make it. If the only reason your saying it is it will make you sound good, toss it. If it's valuable, it still will be in two seconds time plus you're not going to be interrupting them with what you want to say. No stranger is going to care about how awesome you think you are but if you can make them feel awesome by listening and appreciating them then they're going to want to hang around you just to keep that feeling.

Hey, I wouldn't try to fit in. Use innocence and obliviousness to your advantage. Be unique but better in some way. Joke around, smile alot. Be really really honest with people. Rebel a little bit. Be the class clown and you will attract their attention. Be yourself. Seriously huge one. Do whatever you want, don't conform much. Don't be afraid to express emotion.
