You're right, asking questions is boring. Tell her a story about yourself , doesn't even have to be a good story. in fact if it's terrible all the better. try to bring her into the story "what would you have done in that situation?". get her out of her head and engaged in a little role play so you can play off her energy. Conversation is a 2 way street.

You probably know very well what I'm going to say, but just try to say something about the scene; that will be almost always enough.

With scene I mean something in your surroundings, something about what she said, something about what you said, something that you noticed about her, etc. It doesn't have to be a question, just a comment.

I feel like cold-approach has an inherently low success rate. (This is coming from someone who actually does cold-approach.) It's just not easy to have a meaningful conversation with a random girl you met on the street. It's not even about you and her. Like, the girl is usually just in the middle of her day, and she's not ready to give your conversation the energy it takes to make a connection. I get a phone number maybe 30% of the time when I cold approach during the day, and it's usually not a strong number (won't connect to a day 2). Be realistic about what a normal conversion rate is from cold-approach to actually good conversation.

The best tip I got about having conversations when you're cold-approaching is: don't worry that what you're saying connects with what you were just talking about. Say whatever the fuck is on your mind. It's a lot easier to keep talking this way:

You: "So what's your major?*"

Her: "Geology."

You: "I'm so fucking hungry right now."

*Don't ever ask a girl her major, just do cold reading.

You might sound like a dumbass when you actually go back and read the conversation, but she'll barely notice.

The key to talking with women is a seamless blend of natural communication and some canned material. Not straight canned material but after hundreds of approaches and interactions with women you start to develop improvisational lines that work every time so there's no reason that if you find yourself in a situation not to use a awesome can line that you Polished in the past and bring up in the perfect situation look like a genius.
