I used to think the idea of going solo is really pathetic, but after doing it a few times it's definitely better for meeting people. From my experience anyway.

The problem with going out with a buddy, is that you're limiting your chances. The chances of you meeting two women, that you both find attractive and that both find you two attractive is pretty slim.

Whereas when you go at it alone, you don't put those obstacles up. You can approach who you want, when you want and don't have to your buddies interests into account.
