5'6" dude here. I have had some success with women, but some of my shorter friends have had a lot more success than me. I definitely empathize with you because being short is a clear disadvantage for dating. That being said, here are my dating tips for you based on my experience as well as what I've noticed with my shorter friends:

Accept your height.

It won't change, and focusing on something that won't change is not only ineffective, but also unhealthy. Additionally, your insecurities will hurt you more than being short ever will. One common theme with my successful short friends is their solid confidence in themselves.

Focus on your value and fulfillment.

I don't worry about my height anymore. Why? I'm too busy focusing on building value for myself, and for me it's hitting the gym, singing, and building social skills. As you progress, you'll get compliments on your value, and then you'll get success with women, and then you'll realize that you're a valuable handsome motherfucker.

But that mindset and confidence comes from having a lifestyle of value and fulfillment. It comes from the hard work and dedication of striving towards becoming the person that you want to become. You can't convince yourself to have that mindset and confidence without having the value to back it up.

Go out and approach whoever you want.

Most women like taller men. It's a fact of life. But when you know your value, you don't want to deal with women who don't value you. So if you approach a girl and she's not into you, on to the next one. You'll know you're valuable and you'll know she's missing out.

Best idea for you - Use social game approach. Become a regular to bar close to your location, you know to be populated with fine chicks. Then you became the alpha of the group. If someone starts getting over you, make fun of him out in front of the girls. Even if he will be taller and better looking, his social status is low, and group (especially the girls) will stand behind you and will laugh. Having dated guys shorter than me, it was really a turn off when it so obviously bothered them. That was always the beginning of the end when they wouldn't stop bringing it up. That's not something I could help with.

Not to say I'm the example of "all women" but for example my husband now shaves his head and I find him so much sexier bald than when it so obviously bothered him that he was losing his hair but trying to hold on to it. Doesn't mean I like a head of hair less than baldness, but he doesn't let it weigh him down anymore.

Find some shoes with thicker soles and put inserts in them. I'm not saying full platform shoes or anything but work it into your style. Otherwise, shoot your shot and don't be so scared of her turning you down. Be the fun guy who doesn't care, and she'll respond to that more.
