The only time escalation is risky is when the jumps are too big.

If you go from joking around to trying to kiss her on the lips then of course there is a risk. Friend or not.

You'd be better off gradually making her comfortable with being more and more intimate with you.

Get her used to your hands touching. It doesn't have to be hand holding or walking hand in hand. It can be like looking at each other's hands while holding them or playing with each other's hands.

Get her comfortable with all kinds of hugs. Hugs from the front, hugs from the side.

Get her used to touching you in the arm when you're talking.

And you can also gradually test to see if the girl you're with would want to kiss you or not.

You can test if she's comfortable standing close.

You can test if she's comfortable having your faces close, like a foot apart.

You can try to move her around playfully or just physically leading her to see if she's loose around you or tense.

You can let her touch you and observe how it feels, does she put a lot of weight behind the touches or are they very light. More weight means more intimacy.

Better yet, if you can make her comfortable leaning on you when you sit together and you can feel her lean her whole weight on you then that's another good sign.

You can also start by kissing her cheek or forehead.

If her physical reaction is turning her lips away from that kiss, like leaning her cheek in for you to kiss it, then that means she's unlikely to wanna kiss you on the lips.

If her physical reaction is turning her lips toward that kiss, like turning her face towards you as you go in for the cheek kiss, then that means she's likely to wanna kiss you.

Its the difference between trying to do a 6 foot box jump and simply walking to that height on stairs.
