Is there some kind of rule to smiling at a cute guy?

Maybe smiling at guys can work on the small minority of guys who are into cold approaching. But the vast majority of guys, no matter how interested they are in you, and no matter how inviting your smile looks, would never consider for a moment approaching you. If you want to talk to those guys, I am afraid you will have to do the approaching yourself.

Your average guy is either scared to death of approaching or completely ignorant of your approach.

A smile isnt much to go off of for the average dude. The cashier girl smiles at us, the attendant at the department store but that's just her job, doesnt mean she likes us.

Thus most guys see a girl smile and arent sure. Some will go investigate but most wont. We cant read your mind.

Next time OP try to start a conversation. Anything really, if we like you we wont care what comes out of your mouth.

I had a girl come up to me and comment on my water bottle choice and good it was. Knew right away "oh.....this is you approaching me".

My own GF just asked me tons of random questions about myself when we first met.

Just do it more often you’ll get used to it. Also, if you get a good response, just go up and talk to him. Like honestly I’m not good at reading people and am usually too nervous to talk to girls

Eye contact will do a lot, with a smile. I remember girls who I saw in classes that would do that. Holding eye contact, either at a first meeting or if you see the person regularly definitely worked on me.

On the “how” of smiling as you originally asked, a closed mouth grin will work, but don’t overthink it. You may find most people’s smiles to be quite beautiful, when they are not thinking about it.

Alas, if you are thinking about it as the topic suggests, smile at yourself in a mirror and become more confident with your smile, if that’s an issue.

Also, depends on who you are and your culture, but smile more at everyone :)

Just as others have said, those who know will pick it up. But I will say most of us men are clueless mostly because we've had more than one incident where the smile was "just being friendly" so we'll stay back.

Also just like others said, your best bet is to walk up and state your intention. We're not as good as women at hiding what we think. So if he shows even slight interest, not to be prejudice, but woman brain will easily pick it up. We actually have to consciously seek it out or train in the field for it. Most men need clear signals.

If I'm tired and a woman is twirling her hair in front of me and smiling, I might not even notice it. We'll notice if a woman has an upskirt, we'll save a kid from getting hit by a car, we'll be alert to even the slightest creak of a house, but we sometimes can't see what's right in front of our faces.

There could be a lot of reasons why someone wouldn't approach you. Most probably have to do something with them - not being confident enough, being oblivious to signs, not being in the mood to talk, not being attracted to you, already having someone, they don't have the time to chat someone up etc.. Try to establish more eye contact, flip your hair to make your invitation more noticable or just approach yourself.

You'll want to do a little more than that. A smile is a great start but we will think you're just being nice. Maybe ask them a question related to where your location: school, cafe, restaurant. Then say something complimentary. See where that goes.

I think it's hard to say. In my own experience as an Average ( maybe slightly below) dude.

I always see people smile everywhere. From store cashier's to people just being friendly. It's super hard to discern whether someone smiling at me is an invitation to chat or them being friendly.

And maybe it's just me, but in the past I've attempted to talk to people based off the second one. Just to get that brutal realization that people are just being nice, not looking for anything else.

But I'd say it's a learning experience. Right now I'm just trying to build my own confidence talking to people. So if someone smiles at me guy or girl, I always try and take the initiative to talk to them.

There's no rule for something like this. But when you're talking about social interactions, there is a two-way exchange involved.

Whatever one person does can lead to a response in the other person.
If you are not paying attention and don't acknowledge those responses, that's when things get weird.
Like in the movies, the reason why a smile from a bad guy in a movie can be creepy is because it doesn't change in acknowledgment to the other person reacting to the smile. Like the other person is responding in some way to the smile but the other person doesn't show that they've acknowledged or care about the other person's responses.

But for normal interactions, as long as there's some back and forth, everything's cool. As long as you're not staring blank eyed or dead-eyed or never-changing smile, then you should be fine. You might also check your smile in the mirror if you're really that bothered about it but a normal smile shouldn't be a problem.

And of course all the bets are off if you are with someone who's socially awkward and/or in their own head. Such people might be so preoccupied with themselves that they don't respond normally to something is ordinary as a smile.

Also, as to your specific situation, you're describing a guy who's a little bit self-conscious and/or possibly shy.
