I've got a great idea for a restaurant. You have to pass a literacy test and show proof that you own land in order to get it.

This is a recent article from May 2024 in Missouri about a new restaurant called Bliss, opened by a couple 2 weeks ago.

Turning 18 and 21 are rites of passage that let young people go to certain places they couldn’t before.

But one restauranteur near St. Louis is upping the ante.

A new upscale restaurant in Florissant, Missouri, called Bliss has quite the age restriction.

Women must be at least 30 to enter, and men must be at least 35.

Marvin Pate, 36, and his wife opened Bliss just two weeks ago.

“It represents pure happiness and pure utopia. It’s a home away from home. You can come here and feel like you’re actually on a resort,” Pate said.

The restaurant’s West African and Caribbean cuisine isn’t the only hot topic simmering on social media – people can’t stop talking about the age restriction.

“It’s just something for the older people to come do and have a happy hour, come get some good food and not have to worry about some of the young folks that bring some of that drama,” Assistant Manager Erica Rhodes said.

Pate said he’s not worried about any push-back regarding the age to enter.

“Of course, we have been getting a little backlash, but that’s OK because we’re sticking to our code,” he said.

Everyone who enters the restaurant will have to show their identification to a hostess or a St. Louis County police officer after 7 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

Current customers aren’t complaining.

“[Pate] has a policy that suits the clientele that he’s trying to draw in. I think he’s on the right track,” customer Fernando Smith said.

And for anyone too young to dine at Bliss, the restaurant is ready to welcome them in years to come.

“Those younger ones, you can come patronize the business once you turn 30 or 35, because we’re gonna be here for a while,” Rhodes said.

This is just because they want a somewhat older male clientel who's presumably more established, so that they can waste more money on women.

Basically it's the same as Ladies night were women enter for free and might even receive a ticket for 1 free standard drink, while men need to pay.

Naturally, this is a type of business model that needs to be criminalized stat. In the meantime, I hope men have the good sense to boycott those places.

Ummm very smart to restrict your customers in a tight economy for a niche food menu.. I bet it will go the same as the coffee shop that charged men more... Closed for business..

I understand an age minimum so as to avoid some of the drama but this to me is lunacy. With the age for women at 30 and for men 35, married couples cannot enjoy a nice evening out potentially bc of their age difference. It seems to me that this is more of a “fancy” hook up establishment. I’m more than old enough to get in but I absolutely wouldn’t darken their doors. Something just seems “off”.

What The Fuck! This pisses me off. Sexist as well as ageist. Why do men have to 35. And why are they punishing all men under 35 and all Women under 30. If a Restaurant banned those 45 and older ALL HELL would break loose.
