When you're building muscle at the gym, you don't say "should I lift weights OR have a high protein intake", you do both. Get the "or" out of your mindset and get the "and" in.

If there were a definitive answer to your question we would all be pursuing the exact same path and exact same career field. Figure out what you want and go and get it.

However it sounds like you're falling in to the perfect preparation or analysis paralysis trap that is some interpretations of "monk mode". You're not going to emerge a perfect human being, you have to expose yourself to situations and fall on your face.

Look at it this way. 2 cars leave the same destination in a direction 5 degrees apart from one another. In hours they are miles apart. Make small changes to a well rounded life and in time they will compound.

I'd say both if possible but if the lack of money makes it harder to go to the gym just do /r/bodyweightfitness at home.

Making yourself better = people end up interacting with a better person. It's a win for both sides. What's with the "self-improvement is narcissistic" bullshit? I can't possibly become good in my career without focusing on improving my skills, does it mean I'm narcissist?

You should read "No more mr. nice guy" because if you think that focusing on yourself means that you're a narcissist you obviously haven't.

Earning an income is limited by a ceiling dictated by education, capabilities, your personality, etc.

Self improvement raises this ceiling.

My advice: make money as best you can in your current position while working to raise your ceiling.

It depends on your goals really. Something like a university can be self improvement and lead to more money, but your ability to earn money while there is reduced. Honestly you should have enough time to work a full day, hit the gym, and engage in at least 1 hobby. That way you are making money, improving physically, and improving yourself in some other way.
