I remember this story and it was just shameful. I was outside the US and in a capital city, I would visit a few bars literally two blocks from the US embassy.

She was the wife of a civilian technician that worked at a "spy base" monitoring foreign communications transmissions.

The word was she was on prescription painkillers (opiate) and that could have contributed to the accident and increased any penalties she could face. The US embassy became aware of this.

She was interviewed by the police and then sent home to await the outcome of the police investigation. She was told to not leave the country. The US embassy arranged to have her literally smuggled out of the UK via military transport plane from RAF Mildenhall. She also was NOT carrying a diplomatic passport.

The US government immediately after claimed she had diplomatic immunity because she was the wife of an employee that worked at that base. The US brought up some obscure agreement from decades ago that granted immunity to US citizens working at that base. Later it was confirmed that she did not, in fact, have diplomatic immunity.

Also this is not how diplomatic immunity works and if she did have it she could have left openly from civilian airport.

Remember the way the US treated that WNBA "star" just recently?

Mathew Broderick got away with a £100 fine for killing two people in very similar circumstances. To be fair he didn’t run away and claim diplomatic immunity just the shit justice system in the uk. He was probably at the height of his career in 1987 though.

The UK has refused to extradite plenty of men to the US because of stupid excuses about the law in the US. UK won’t even extradite terrorists because they might get the punishment they deserve. So no, I don’t feel bad that the US won’t send this woman to the UK; at least she can honestly say it wasn’t intentional unlike the people the UK protects.
