Did you grow up without a father figure? Let me know

That was me. I was raised by an immigrant mom, who was single and only had a fourth grade education. Life was rough, and now that I’m 29 and without much to show for it, it’s still rough. Add to that the fact that society is hell bent on disadvantaging men for the benefit of women, and it feels impossible sometimes.

my father wasn't in the picture until I was 7 years old and even then I moved out of the country couple of years later. My stepdad has been in my life since around 3 years old, and I've had other father figures in the ways of an uncle and grandfather who showed me basic things about being a man, like peeing standing up and respecting women. But there's always been something that's missing.

I love my stepdad and he taught me plenty of valuable lessons, but it's always been difficult to connect with him. As an adult, I tried connecting with my dad once he moved to the US but it's been a struggle, as he has his own family. However, he's given me great advice and taught me things about being a man that I never got from anyone else, maybe because I didn't want to. Being in my 30s, I still struggle with power dynamics between myself and men at work who are above me or more experienced. I feel beneath them, although sometimes they are my age. I tend to relate with women a lot more, and I'll say that I'm definitely a little too sensitive.

I think it's taken my a longer time to "grow up" due to the absence of my father and his lack of consistency when trying to reconnect. Can't say it's all his fault, but I'm sure it all started because he wasn't there at a young age.

My dad left our family when i was 3 or 4 years old. He remarried when i was 5. I remember being the ring bearer. Then he moved across the country when i was 7.
