Unfortunately, getting girls can be a bit like trying to corral very skittish sheep, especially in younger girls with options and time in their favour.

Girls in general don't want to be pinned down or committed to something by a guy that's trying to get with them, so they will be very loose and flaky unless they 1. become invested in you or 2. perceive you as someone worth having.

To make them become invested, they need to share some sort of emotional connection with you, via friendship, shared experience, proximity. It can be hard to do this with girls you cold approach, and is usually more of a long-game scenario that comes about by interacting with girls in social clubs/social circles.

The second category, i.e. perception of you being worth their time/interest, is far more applicable to cold-approaching. For them to perceive you as someone worth having, your overall game/appearance/vibe has to be on point. You have to be generally well groomed, have an air of confidence, have solid flirting/banter, have interesting qualities about yourself, and then hope that you've piqued their interest enough that they stick. The better you are at this, the more likely you'll have success. But remember, this is only getting the foot in the door, with the objective for you to be to get them on a date sooner rather than later, before the skittish sheep runs away from you or through the wrong gate.

It sounds like in the scenario you described, your banter/conversation was non-existent, demonstrating that either you're boring or not confident, and so the girl would have little reason to be interested in talking to you in the long-term. And then in terms of the girl you chatted to over the course of the week, you may have moved too slow, or didn't keep the text fun/light-hearted enough and her interest waned.
