Today, I’m going to talk about the biggest mistakes men make when flirting - and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Flirting Too Late

This is a classic mistake. A guy goes on a date and at the beginning, he’s in logical mode - talking about work, hobbies, culture. And that’s fine for the first few minutes. But the problem is, he stays there way too long. Not just five minutes, but an hour or even two or three! If it’s a date, he might wait until the very end to start flirting.

By then, it’s way harder because:

  • You’ve conditioned yourself to stay in logical mode, making the switch to flirting feel unnatural.
  • She’s also gotten used to the dynamic and will find it weird if you suddenly start flirting out of nowhere.

The fix? Don’t wait too long. If you’re on a date, the first 5-10 minutes can be light chit chat - how’s her week been, etc. - but then you need to start escalating. If it’s the initial approach and it’s your first time meeting her, you should be flirting right away because in the initial approach, you don’t know how much time you have.

A lot of guys also wait for the “perfect moment” to start flirting. But here’s the thing - it doesn’t exist. You’re never going to feel like, “Oh, this is the perfect time.” Flirting always requires stepping outside your comfort zone. So instead of looking for the perfect conditions (like sitting next to her or waiting for her to be in a certain mood), just start. Take the first step. If she’s on a date with you, that’s already a sign she’s interested.

Mistake #2: Being One-Dimensional

Most guys flirt in one way: compliments. And while showing verbal intent is good, if all you do is compliment her, it’s like being an MMA fighter who only throws jabs. You won’t win the fight.

Flirting isn’t just about pulling her in - it’s about push-pull. You draw her in, then playfully push her away. This creates tension. If you’re just stacking compliments, you’re only pulling her in, which creates a high-pressure situation with no breathing room.

The fix? Expand your toolkit of flirting techniques. Learn how to use:

  • Teasing - Lightly challenging her
  • Exaggeration - Playfully blowing things out of proportion
  • Role-play - Pretending you’re in a fun scenario together

Mistake #3: Only Flirting with Words

A huge mistake guys make is thinking flirting is just about what they say. That’s why you see so many guys searching for “best pickup lines” or “what to say to make her fall for you.” But honestly? Words are just a small part of flirting, the tip of the iceberg.

Most of the attraction happens non-verbally. If you really think about it, the words are just an excuse to be next to her while the “real talking” happens through body language, tonality, and your energy.

(we are not talking about building comfort here which relies much more on verbal communication but pure flirting to create attraction)

Think about the world’s best comedians - they have mastered the delivery of their jokes. My favourite comedian is Anthony Jeselnik and I have tried to tell his jokes to my friends but they just don’t land as well as when Anthony tells them. He has mastered pausing, controlling his voice, his tempo, and emphasising specific parts of the joke to make them land better. And it’s because he has practiced it thousands of times.

That’s what you need to do when you use the flirting techniques I mentioned above. Learn how to use non-verbal communication in flirting.

  • Eye contact - Strong eye contact creates positive tension.
  • Voice tone - A slow, deep, controlled voice is attractive.
  • Proximity - Knowing when to move closer or pull back is important for calibration.

Master how to use and combine these and you’ll become a better flirt.
