Of course, you need to add a fun twist, but as with everything in life, don't over-exaggerate. Try to aim for 60% of the time being witty/playful and 40% serious.

However, a boring question remains a boring question, but they are essential (what's your name, where are you from, what do you do for a living, who are you here with, what do you do later etc etc)... but what you say afterward will change the dynamic of the conversation.

After she says what she does for a living use either version to continue:

- Oh, you're a cashier? I have a friend who told me a funny story about her ex, who was also a cashier. He said...' [insert a funny story]

- I'm a [your job], but I'm not crazy about the salary. That's why I've been taking beginner Japanese massage lessons from the internet. Give me your hand; I'll show you what I've learned so far...' (This is good for escalation).

If you see the lady has a high energy, open body language you can even tell her .... "I learn from the internet beginners striptease lessons. All day so far, I've just been practicing putting my pants on and taking them off. Want to see how I can do it with just two fingers?"

Assumption is also a method to ask a boring question without actually asking, but you can't do this too much. One or at most two times is enough.

'You look like you're a lawyer.... what you are not a lawyer? Hold on, three guesses. You must be a teacher, a math teacher because of your smile... Oh! Not a teacher.
