Over the course of the last couple months, I've read multiple accounts of AFBB. I just found out that one of my plates has a steady boyfriend of 5 years.

What surprised me quite a bit was that so many of the posts pointed out that the AF felt sorry for the BB. And in some respects, I did. One theory is that we wished the BB would show some masculinity, and be the best they could be. But also that it would probably hurt that guy. If any of you have been cheated on, you know exactly the butthurt I'm talking about.

I'll just put this here: Do most of you feel bad on some level for being the AF side of the equation?

If so, here is my take.

Richard Dawkins in 'The Selfish Gene' hypothesises that we act, the way we act for the survival of our genes. Check the wiki page for a decent summary and his evidence backing the theory.

How does this apply to cognitive dissonance?

When we do something we feel uneasy about, say in this case fucking another man's partner, we either change our action, our beliefs or our perception of the action. Some of you may decide not to fuck another taken woman. Some of you would say that because AWALT, there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of a situation. Or you may downplay the effect sleeping with that woman and tell yourself she will most likely keep it all a secret.

Underpinning this is the initial feeling of guilt.

The perfect situation for your genes to survive is to make sure that they are well looked after, and have a mother who loves them unconditionally. While men seek that love on some level from there partner, from all accounts, it's almost impossible. We feel bad because if we are less prone to fucking another woman, we are then hoping that this will be universally felt.

Dawkins talks about the use of morality in society, and that it is underpinned by the need for our genes to survive. On the whole, we aren't going to murder someone, not just because we don't want to go to jail, but because it leads to a more harmonious society. I should add that alot of this is subconscious.

Anyway, just a theory, I'd love to hear some robust and constructive debate.
