I was married for 6 years to a woman from an extremely wealthy, enmeshed family. Her father controlled everything—finances, major decisions, even the terms of our marriage. It was toxic from the start, and I ignored every red flag. I was manipulated, isolated, and slowly lost who I was.
The marriage fell apart during COVID, and by late 2021, I found the strength to leave. I knew it would be hard, but I had no idea it would become a full-blown campaign to erase me from my children’s lives and completely ruin my life. My ex-wife, her parents, and her lawyer are all high-conflict people (HCPs), and they made it a mission to ruin me.
We have two young kids. From the moment we separated, my ex made it clear I’d have to fight to be a father. Her dad hired the most expensive litigious lawyer in the city and launched a blitz of false accusations: addiction, abuse, neglect. They were never backed by police reports or protective orders, but I've spent the last four years doing random drug tests (all clean) just to prove I'm safe to be around my own kids. The harassment hasn't stopped there—they've also targeted my partner and my family.
The legal bills drained me. They had endless financial backing; I didn’t. Eventually, to avoid bankruptcy, I had no choice but to sign an agreement. I now see my kids every second weekend, and she has final decision-making authority. I've made my peace with it. I still show up. I still love them. But I've accepted I'm not going to be the parent I thought I'd be.
I make around $150,000 a year, but as a salesperson, my income fluctuates. For the three years leading up to the divorce, I was making closer to $300,000 a year, and that's what the court decided to base my earning potential on. Meanwhile, my ex has a PHD but chooses not to work. As part of our final agreement, the court didn’t impute any income to her. I pay just shy $12,000 a month in total support. She remarried recently to a high-net-worth individual and is actively trying to have him replace me as the children’s father. She lives a lifestyle I can't compete with nor do I want to. I’m still just trying to rebuild my own life.
The part that hurts the most? Her father once told me his goal was to ruin me—to not stop until I was "gone." I genuinely believe they hoped I’d end my own life. But I didn't. I’m still here. I’m with an incredible woman now who I met two years after leaving and has stood by me through this chaos. But now having to self-represent in court, defending myself against lies, and watching my role as a father get reduced to fragments... it’s taken a profound toll.
I'm not looking for advice. I just needed to say this out loud somewhere. If you've been through something similar, you're not alone. The system is an absolute joke, it is backed by bad actors out for personal gain with no accountability. The bigger stick wins I get it now.
