A little while ago I learned some stuff about marriage laws that recently made me rethink how I feel about marriage, specifically the laws surrounding marriage, divorce, and family law.

I’m not sure how many people are aware of this, but most if not all states have something called presumption of paternity. Basically put simply, it means legally you are presumed to be the father of any children your wife has. Normally you’d think that would be common sense right? Well, what isn’t common sense is that this also applies to illegitimate children. So if your wife has an affair while you are married and gets pregnant from said affair, you very well could be legally responsible for that child, even tho you aren’t biologically the father.

You can try to disestablish paternity, but, from what I understand in many cases it’s not as simple as presenting a DNA test in a lot of cases. If my understanding is correct, you also have to argue and prove why it would be in the best interest of the child to disestablish paternity, and that is not necessarily an easy process to do.

I encourage you as always to do your own research but just know that laws like these exist. I did not know this. And a lot of people I’ve mentioned it too did not seem to know this either. So I thought I’d share this information on here
