As simple as it sounds, one moment at a time. Also keep in mind many people out there don't have an internal monologue/inner voice. Be a better listener and it'll give you time to slow down and focus on what's going on.

You are right. Presence of mind is the key factor for flirting, or teasing, and even connecting.

Honestly, presence of mind is cultivated only period of time.

You need a daily ritual -

Try speaking with a random person (anyone) everyday. Have a bit of a conversation.

Once you go home, reflect on the conversation, and replay it with different phrases from your end. Those could be funny, normal statements with more depth, questions of more importance, etc..

This way your mind will be rewired.

Another thing - Practice a two second pause sometimes before adding to the ongoing conversation. It may seem uncomfortable at first, but with time, it will be a second nature to you..
