"Divorce rate" is a misnomer. It falsifies the picture of what's going on. Consider that in the year 2020, for every 100 marriages there were 85.5 divorces. So, for example, if there were 5 000 marriages, there were 4 275 divorces in 2020. However, it's not the number of divorces linked to marriages from 2020. It was 4 275 divorces from all marriages established in the last 100 years or however long. So, a pair that married in 1974 and divorced in 2020 is counted in the stupid "divorce rate" for the year 2020.

How stupid is that?

It’s not true. It means that there were 85.5 divorces per 100 marriages, not that 85.5% of marriages end in divorce. It’s this high because less people are getting married.
