Marriage provisions are equal regardless of who brought what, and assets acquired during marriage are divided equally. If you brought nothing, it's still divided 50/50 if things go south. It is your good heart that's making you question your feelings and legal expectations, but if it were her, she might focus not just on assets but also on destroying you, if she’s a toxic person.

Men should view marriage as a contractual agreement, similar to a business partnership, and act accordingly. Throw those emotions out of the window, divorce is sour and can wreck one’s life continuously, if both parties are unreasonable

Flip roles, she would be coming after half the equity in the house, half the savings and child support and alimony. Don’t fall into the ‘She’s a woman’ mentality, go for everything she would have gone for.

IDK how it works in the UK but the home equity would become a joint asset here in California, despite only her family contributing the entire down payment as a gift to the COUPLE.

Have you tried putting everything into chatgpt? I spoke to a top divorce lawyer and to be honest I didn't get much more than chatgpt.

So seems: 50/50 on equity after deposit is 52.5k each. 50/50 on savings is 60k each. So 110k to you?

So why do you and your wife think only 48k to you is fair or even generous as you put it?

I'm impressed at the size of mortgage you took on your salaries. Must be an amazing house. Wish I had a mum and dad like your wife's. I married and divorced up too. Unlucky for me I was the big earner with no entitlement to inheritance.

You’re owed what you’re owed according to the law

From what you’ve listed you have about £300k in equity and £120k in savings. At a minimum, you should be getting £60k from savings. Your legal jurisdiction will dictate what happens to the equity. You didn’t say how much they put down. Given that you’re early into the mortgage and have that much equity, it’s probably substantial. You could probably make a case that it was a gift to the marital home and unless stipulated otherwise should be treated as such. So you’re definitely entitled to £60K and up to about £210k (£300k equity/2 plus the £60k).

If they made the case that the gift was to their daughter and should be subtracted, that’s something the courts would sort out. Where I am, I would make the case that despite the intent, it went toward the marital home and negotiate from there.

So no, £48k isn’t generous. It’s a payout. Don’t take it. You’re at a minimum entitled to half of savings and half of the added value to the home. £80k would be the floor.

At least I know it’s not JUST American women who are fucking crazy.
