When we talk about "male violence" without using descriptors, we drop a collective moral condemnation onto an entire gender. This lazy use of language flattens half the population into a monolith. It is deeply harmful to good men and young boys who are doing their best, only to see themselves represented as an inherent risk to society.
Some might point out that misogynistic men do the exact same thing when they talk about "women" in sweeping, generalized terms. That is obviously condemnable, but there is a radical difference in the nature of the speech. When those men generalize women, it is usually to mock them, complain, or generalize their behavior and characteristics.
When society generalizes "men" without descriptors in the context of violence, it goes beyond mocking. It implicitly labels an entire demographic as potential abusers, rapists, and murderers. Weaponizing language to tie an entire biological category to the worst elements of human criminality is a completely different level of hate speech, and it needs to be recognized as such. Men need descriptors. People are afraid of violent, dangerous individuals, not the mere state of being male.
To illustrate, see the difference between these two statements:
Violent men are dangerous. When I meet an unfamiliar man, I use caution until I know his character.
vs.
Men are dangerous, because any man could be a violent predator.
The first is a rational risk assessment based on an individual's lack of information. The second is an ideological flattening of 4 billion people into a monolithic threat.
