A fact is, though, that the average man can only marginally improve a womans' life in the present. Thriving as a couple is still difficult but relatively easier, however, picking the wrong partner will set you back even further.

In the 90's and early 2000's, we had an actual middle class, so women had more options of leaving men they weren't really compatible with or treated well by. Now? I think it's smarter to stay married even if you are miserable with an asshole. You just can't be overly emotional and leave defiantly with no financial backup. Unless you already make your own and/or come from a rich and powerful family, your child will suffer.

There was a random news article about a woman in South America around the same time like 2023 and she caught her husband cheating so she left him with her 4 young children and she ended up dying in the rainforest or something.

There's a lot of hyperbole here. For starters, we absolutely have a middle class in the U.S. Anyone who says otherwise is doing it for clicks. That middle class might not be thriving as much as in other generations, but it still makes up over 50% of the population. We could cite any number of reasons for the struggles, from Covid-19 related economic issues, the rise of AI, poor financial literacy, garbage spending habits, etc. The reality is likely a combination, but despite what you see online, there have historically been far worse financial times, even in recent history.

I don't know that single women are dying alone in the rain forest (literally or figuratively) at any higher rate than other people who planned poorly are suffering in the end. Statistically speaking, married couples are better off, period. They live longer, are more financially sound, and generally report greater levels of happiness (debatable as an actual fact). That's true for both men and women.

Now, if you want to talk facts and statistics on this, that's going to be tough. Self Magazine and Psychology Today will tell you that single older women thrive more, while BBC will tell you single older men do. As a former research librarian, I say this is just the nature of these studies and a lot of modern research. The people putting these things together usually have a confirmation bias and tell you what they want to hear. The most legitimate studies are going to report a complex combination of factors and trade-offs between the sexes and, in short, blanket statements about either genders well-being in old age singledom aren't especially valid. The most accurate statement here would be that married older people are better off financially than single ones. Any happiness studies are just going to tell you who is most likely to claim happiness. Both married women and single women have a vested interest in proving that they win at this stage of life. Regardless, you could be single or married and end of life care is just astronomically expensive, no matter who or where. Good financial planning is going to make the difference, regardless of gender.

They do. Most divorces end in 50/50 custody with all kinds of stipulations about where a spouse can move in regards to school districts and access to their other parent. This is pretty standard now. Exceptions obviously exist.

I think I am rambling, but my overall take is you cannot just impulsively throw men away, especially once you've had kids. You need to concede that man is always going to have a place in your life as the father of your children. You made that choice to have his child, now you need to live with it.

You are rambling, but I don't think you're wrong in your conclusion. Married people need to do what they can to make it work, much more so than has become the norm, particularly when children are involved. Every study shows children are better off being raised in a nuclear family. Statistically, we can also say that women fair worse in divorce. As always, though, it's going to boil down to the individual circumstances and choices of those involved. My brother has spent 20 years married to a woman who spends every dime he makes on clothes she doesn't wear and manicures no one sees because she won't work. He's high earning, yet has absolutely no savings for retirement over 40. Is marriage better for either of them? Doubtful. Would single life be better? At least for him, it would. On the flip side, I left my abusive marriage at 23. I've been married nine years, have five kids, own my own home, and spent 10 years in a fulfilling career before I left to stay home. I don't know where he is, but I hope it's prison. Last I heard, he was begging for money for weightloss surgery claiming his size kept him from working, even though he never held a job for more than a couple of months in his early 20s.

In general, I think you're in an eye opening phase. You're realizing that men aren't all bad, that a lot of women's problems are created by other women, not some villainous mustache-twirling Patriarchy. Stick around and take what you can from RPW.

I think I understand and agree with the overall point you are making in the final paragraph which is that we shouldn't aim for perfection in partners and sometimes a less than ideal partner is better than none at all. As someone who lived alone and was single for many years, this was how I felt personally. I was lonely and the challenges of marriage I have found to be better than the challenges of singlehood which for me was not financial but lonlieness.

However I don't think the data points you include support your stance. Specifically:

I really don't buy this but again, I have a successful career. Yes if you marry smart, you marry a man who helps you financially, but SO many people ignore the fact that you can (an many women DO) marry dumb and men can financially ruin you too. These unemployed guys, going into debt, doing drugs, or whatever can drain your finances. My mother was the breadwinner and lost tons of money to my father who was an addict with sparse employment. She would have financially been better off unmarried and getting child support. Women who make more than the men also have to pay the man in a divorce, and it's easy to make more than an unemployed or underemployed guy. I'm not trying to get all feminist here by any means, my point is marriage alone doesn't do this - marrying financially smart only does. And many women marry DUMB, especially the type on Kevin's show.

This may be "smarter to stay married" now as you say but many women are still not doing that. Many are opting out of marriage and kids even more now than they ever did in the 90s and 2000s. Look at 4B and the number of childless women. Women are still opting out despite the financial environment and they are more picky now than ever I believe. So I don't think this theory is playing out as you say. I might agree there is less sex than the 90s and 2000s, so less sluts out to this guys' point, but there are also far less relationships and marriages.

So what is the answer? My take would be: it's the approach in "The Case Settling for Mr. Good Enough." Women need to lower their standards for the superficial stuff (looks, money, status, height) and raise their standards on character (honestly, faithfulness, kindness, emotional maturity). Of course this is easier said than done I realize as it's not so easy to compromise on attraction, I didn't... but I also spent many many years alone searching and getting my heart stomped on. It's a trade off.

There are plenty of women in relationships who cannot retire gracefully. Go to any finance sub and you will see plenty of couples who have financial problems because they chose to have kids and a stay at home mom when they can't afford it on one salary. My parents remained married to the end and both died penniless.

The truth is nuanced. Yes sharing your life with a person can make it a lot easier. That's provided you find the right person. There are women in relationships with men who drain them financially. The women in abusive and toxic relationships are certainly being held back from their potential. The financial damage cannot be calculated but there is a cost to being in these relationships.

Another issue is some women struggle when they leave because they didn't invest in themselves first. Some see a man as a plan and when that plan fails they have nothing to fall back on.

I believe finding the right man is better than being single, but I think being single is better than being with the wrong man.

Full text: I consider myself a "feminist" in that I believe women should have equal rights as men and be treated as human beings. However, I went through a period where I would watch Kevin Samuels videos on Youtube for the irony as a form of entertainment. I didn't agree with everything he said obviously, some of it was outright hateful and he really seemed to enjoy roasting the lowest rungs of society that were easy pickings, but he had some valid points.

(This is before his red bull induced death of course- haven't watched in awhile) This is also when he was gaining a lot of momentum and fans and going viral of course so like 2022 ish? Anyways, there was one video that really stuck out to me, "The Future for Modern Women is Disney" and it scared the shit out of me. The rundown is basically that in this economy, women cannot retire gracefully without being in a partnership.

Now I always thought that women had the option to be alone and be fine, but again he pointed out that in this day and age that is near impossible. Now my mom is divorced and she struggles a lot with finding stability and she's getting older so I worry. I also look at single mom's struggling, I understand why they left, but also I can more than understand the trend of women staying in miserable dead bedroom marriages with men who provide almost nothing, because they pay half the bills and it's just not economically feasible.

Sometimes the perspective of a rude, blunt man just makes more sense to me. For example, I knew this cokehead realtor who was always saying off the wall colorful comments and he remarked to me once that in a good economy is when the sluts come out, but in a bad economy is when women want marriage and stability. I used to pity women that stayed in marriages where they were getting cheated on for the sake of "family" and their "children, and maybe it is stupid and the children do suffer, but they also suffer even *more* being raised by a single mom.

Now I think having a useless man around even just symbolically as a figurehead gives your children more stability and even dignity in society. I'm not bashing all men, even though I do have man hating tendencies, I just feel like I went from one extreme when I was younger i.e. men are bad, to slightly maturing. Man here, but anecdotally from the women in my life, this checks out. Different women have different opinions on the "I don't need no man" mentality, but largely I'd say women tend to be way less independent than men, and not necessarily due to financial reasons.

My wife and my mom are two opposite extremes. My wife currently makes more than I do. She's stable, makes good decisions and has a good support system. She's probably the epitome of the woman who could actually 100% be independent and not need a man, and yet she unabashedly knows she wants and needs a man. Any decent stable guy in her league would fit the bill, but I got there first. She's self aware enough to she needs the mental stability a guy can offer, and that she can't reach her goals (kids, house maintenance, and sanity) without someone who thinks differently than her. She knows what she needs to contribute to get what she wants, and she's happy to pay the price because it's a good deal and she likes it when everyone benefits.

My mom's the opposite. She made good money her whole life, wanted it all, picked weak men because she wanted no compromises, and now she's broke and divorced 4 times over and was a single mother of two while she raised us. I haven't met the guy, but apparently she's dating someone new and he's helping her with expenses. Fine by me since it's money I don't have to send, but I don't envy the guy. My wife (rightfully) despises my mother's decisions.

My mom grew up in a time where things and money was cheap. My wife and I could see the writing on the wall after the 2008 crash. I think it's just a product of the times. "Good times make weak people, weak people make hard times, hard times make for strong people". Our generation has to be tougher and more careful, not just financially, but sexually.
