I thought this was a perfect example of why women should not be the unofficial "default" in custody cases. Men and women both have important roles to play in their kids' lives, and the effects of the presence (or absence) of father figures is something that is far from negligible. I once worked at an underprivileged daycare for a while, and as far as I know I was the only man to work there before or since. The teachers still tell me how wonderful it was for the many of the boys to have a positive male role model for once.

This is not to say anything against the many wonderful single and gay parents out there, but it is simply worth noting that women don't hold a monopoly on being good role models or parents for children development. Both men and women can contribute to their development in different ways.
