The topic about genital mutilation that I've been reading about on this subreddit got me thinking: What about male to female transgenders who elect to have that surgery?

When it comes to infants getting circumcised it's pretty much what the mother wants, and clearly in a male to female gender reassignment surgery it's the choice of the individual, but why is there no outcry against it?

If I take a knife and cut myself I am seen as sick and in need of special counseling, if a woman chose to heat up a spoon and burn herself shut, save for a hole for pee and menstruation, that woman would be taken in for counseling, however, if a man wants to have a doctor slice open his penis and tuck it inside of him, that's just peachy.

Why?

We're told that he's a man living in a woman's body and that's what he needs to feel right. If someone is so distraught that they need to physically mutilate their bodies, isn't that on the same level as someone who cuts them self?

Or, is there a double standard at play? You can't cut yourself or amputate a limb because that's wrong, but elect to cut off testicles and turn a penis into a vagina: no problem! Does our society have a problem with the penis to such an extent that it's the one part of a man's body that can be cut off or sliced and tucked and no one is going bat an eyelash at, as long as the owner wants it done, it can be circumcised upon the wishes of just one parent right after birth and society has no issue with that.
