Whatever the reason, this study indicates that cognitive differences between men and women are not solely inherited. It suggests that, to a degree hitherto unacknowledged, they are learned from the roles a society expects males and females to perform, and that those differences can change as society changes. Modern times require modern thinking.

EDIT: I think, however, that gender stereotypes are the reason for the social development differences. If girls are constantly told that boys are better at math and science, leads me to beleive that soon enough they will believe it and subsequently not perform as well in math and science.

The article only says that only to a degree they could be from society. I think that, yes, that has to be at least one part of it, but biology I think is another part of it.

I can't remember where, but I think I remember a study about men being better with abstract and spatial reasoning, while women have better memory and multi-tasking abilities. The point was that their brains are different.

Newborns already show markedly different interests. I don't buy this crap. The biological differences dominate. The differences in improvement they are talking about are relatively tiny. The only thing they have shown is that higher standards of living make everyone develop better.

The economist is just a feminist magazine that latched on to the slightly more pronounced effect on women. Also left out of the analysis is the fact that preferential treatment of women in education occurs more often in the northern european countries with higher standards of living.
