Hello all, 21F here. I've been a redditor for a long time (~4 years), but I just discovered this subreddit a couple of weeks ago. I've been reading it non-stop and I think that it advocates for a lifestyle I'd really like to be a part of. However, I'm not sure that I agree with all of it, and I don't even know how I would go about starting this journey.
My concerns
I was raised mostly by my mom because my parents divorced when I was 5 years old. It was a necessary divorce because my father was an abusive alcoholic who had no desire to change or get better. He died when I was 11 years old due to his drinking. My mom raised me and my brother and worked full-time. She dated a couple of guys over the years, but she mostly dedicated her time to working and taking care of us kids.
Because I almost never saw my dad, and my mom was focused on raising kids instead of dating, I grew up without a strong male presence in my life. I've seen several posts mentioning how important it is for a woman to have grown up with a father figure (preferably one who maintained his traditional gender role). That's something I missed out on and I can't really change it now - is that a big problem?
My second worry is that my style is not all that feminine. I am a tomboy by nature. I'll wear a dress or skirt 3-5 times a month and I wear jewelry on a daily basis. However, I have never cared much for makeup or styling my hair, and not for a lack of trying. I was blessed with naturally clear skin and a pretty face. The same goes for my hair, which is shiny and neat. I air-dry it every day and it looks completely fine.
Also...I hate TRP. I'm sorry, but I do. I've found that it's basically the insane cousin of /r/seduction, but worse. I don't think that TRP and RPW have much in common at all, other than that both subreddits think that gender roles are important.
My situation
My boyfriend (22M) and I have been dating for a year. We recently moved in together and I am extremely happy in the relationship. We're both very serious about each other and are both on the same page when it comes to future goals, marriage, personal beliefs, etc.. Our relationship is very equal and built on mutual respect. I want to maintain that sense of fairness and respect, but at the same time, I want him to kind of 'take over'.
I've seen a lot of talk of a captain/first mate dynamic, and I think it would suit our relationship well. I want to be turned to for advice and support, but I want him to take the reins and have him make the final decisions on everything. I want my voice to be heard and respected, but also to submit to him. Does that make sense?
I think my boyfriend would make a great captain. He's definitely a man's man, which is one of the things that attracts me to him so much. I also think it would be very easy to convince him to alter our relationship to reflect traditional gender roles in part because his parents are both immigrants (from the same country), meaning he was raised with traditional gender roles. His mom cooks, cleans, and generally takes care of her husband. My boyfriend's father is the main breadwinner (he has his own business, which the wife sometimes helps out with) and he doesn't really do any housework unless it's fixing the sink or something along those lines.
In conclusion
I think that it would be easy for me and my boyfriend to become a traditional couple, but also don't think I can/want to conform 100% to EVERYTHING I've read on this subreddit.
I'd really appreciate if if you'd leave me your thoughts, ask me questions, and generally help me to understand what it's like living as a RPW!
