Actual self deprecation hurts your image. Self deprecation jokes where you're pointing out a strength but pretending it's a flaw is fine.

It's insecurity when you're putting yourself down just to make people laugh, aka looking for reactions.

Do it as a humble brag. For example, my arms are big and I used to joke that I never focus on them at the gym because I start to look like donkey kong.

Stuff like that where it's not too serious. But use it sparingly.

Self-deprecating jokes can be hilarious, but using them all of the time during normal conversation isn't funny and makes you look pathetic.

This is social interaction 101, not rocket science. Jesus fucking Christ.
