A month ago, this person was sending emails asking for help from kind strangers....to unlock the $10 million fortune of a Nigerian prince.

I think it is heavily related to biology.
Women are attracted to strength, confidence and harshness on a biological level because those traits help make strong children who will survive in a harsh world.
Just because some people think it goes against ow "the way things should be", things are never "how they should be" and we are here to do one thing over all, survive on this harsh rock that is tumbling through space around an incredibly massive ball of fire (or plasma for you scientifically anal people).

Women are biologically attracted to dominant men. He doesn't have to treat you like shit though. But yeah, an asshole is not mutually exclusive from a dominant man.

Women are equal to men. Equal in the yin-yang sense. It's not cut right down the middle, both sexes excel in certain areas that the other is capable of but not the best at. That's why a relationship that's equal and fulfilling to both partners isn't something that jives with modern feminism. A woman needs to have her expectations of a mate and a man needs to have his. They may not appear equal through the looking glass of modern feminism but really they satisfy a biological need and a deeper happiness in both individuals if done right.
Treating a woman like shit isn't red pill. That's really amateur. A woman needs you to guide her and make decisions not talk down to her and manipulate her. When it's done right, and most importantly when a woman knows her role in the relationship it's as close to perfect and fulfilling to both parties as possible. I recommend /r/trpwomen as a starting point if you really need help. Otherwise troll elsewhere.
