This is a theory I developed because I noticed I was giving out respect to people who had not earned it, particularly women. This has always resulted in me putting myself out for people who don’t deserve it and who would not reciprocate, and feeling bad when people who don’t see me as a person treat me poorly.

I was reading Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian at the time, and it has strong Gnostic undertones. In the particular branch of Gnosticism represented in the book, people are divided into somas, or people who are trapped in a worldly mechanical mindset, and pneumas, people who have higher spiritual consciousness. This made an impression on me, but since I have no authority to evaluate someone’s spiritual development, I developed Hank Theory:

hank, n. - 1. a male or female who is not self-aware in their thoughts and actions, and are therefore mechanically operating out of immediate self-interest. 2. anyone who has not proven their worth as a true friend.

I realized I had been assuming hanks were my friends without vetting them. This was painful for several reasons. First, hanks would do things that hurt me with their unearned trust. Second, it’s a disappointing experience to have to demote someone to hank. Third, when a hank disappointed me, I would give them another chance before demoting them, which meant I had to let someone fuck me over repeatedly before I had a proper conception of them. And finally, I was arguing with hanks, and who fucking cares what a hank says?

Suddenly, new shit had come to light, and in light of this new shit, I drafted the following guiding principles for myself:

1) Most people are hanks most of the time.

2) Everyone starts as a hank for everyone else. I am a hank to you. You are a hank to me.

3) Promote hanks to friend status only after multiple demonstrations of worth

4) Don’t let a hank upset you. Since a hank is doing most things unconsciously and reactively, there is no reason to be upset by anything they say.

5) Don’t argue with a hank, as you will not make a difference. Most discussions on reddit are hank discussions.

6) Don’t treat hanks with disdain. At any moment, you could be a hank, too.

Now, some may perceive this as disrespectful, but I believe it is quite the contrary. It is disrespectful for me to project my beliefs of friendship and trust onto someone who has not taken the steps to acquire friendship and trust. Trusting someone is to some degree a relinquishing of autonomy, and it’s not exactly polite to hold someone else responsible for my beliefs.

These guidelines did help me maintain my center and stop giving away my trust. After several months, I stopped having to constantly label people as hanks, and it’s much easier for me to disengage with people if they are not worth my while. Hopefully, this can help someone else.

TL;DR: If your name is actually Hank, sorry, breh.

Its really awesome as you can expect. But there's still somewhat of a BP culture at work, what can you expect if there's a Women's Studies department (Read: BA in hamstering). But aside from all the bullshit take back the night nonsense and "gay pride" shit there's a lot of opportunities in college. Just be sure to find the right people early on, other RP people who know what's going on. Having a group of enlightened and like minded people around you in college is one of the most empowering parts.

Uni is what you make it. Spend 30 minutes on reddit and you'll find plenty of dudes who were majorly let down by everything not being awesome. You have to make it happen for yourself, talk to people, make friends, join clubs, find parties, and get your tired, hungover, stressed out, sleep deprived ass to the gym.

Focus on quantity over quality. Freshmen friends will come and go but the bigger your crew the more options you have.

The first 2 weeks are like everyone's on ecstasy. People are super outgoing and friendly and looking for that crazy college experience. Make the most of it. Go to the welcome week events.

Study. Don't lose the game in the first quarter.

Don't ride a razor scooter around campus.

Ask to sit with random people in the cafeteria instead of eating alone.

Introduce yourself to your neighbors, especially if you're in a co-ed dorm.

Intramural sports are great if you're into that.

Go to your professors office hours. No one ever does and developing relationships with them is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

First thing first college is that you're there to get a degree. Make that your priority because no one is going to hold your hand in college. Try to hit the gym 3x a week. Know when it's busy or not. If you're going to rush a frat, take a visit to /r/frat . They have a lot of good advice on frats. If you don't get a bid into a frat then join a club. The key the college is net-working. Be as social as you can.

Hey man, you're lucky to have discovered TRP before starting college! I discovered it late into my senior year, and while it was late, I still reaped some of its benefits during my final moments of my college career.

I can only imagine how much more badass my time at college would've been, had I known these principles sooner. Enjoy the journey, maintain frame (with everyone: teachers, males, females), focus on your grades/career paths, and wrap it up!
