Of all the lies we are told today this has to be the most heartbreaking. Women, we are not fertile forever. Her fertility issues for 5 years? She was 41 when they first started trying. That's not "fertility issues" that's nature. We have got to stop fooling people into thinking it's reasonable to expect to have children at that age.

Jimmy also said he hoped their story could offer inspiration to other couples facing difficulties conceiving.

'I know people have tried much longer (than we have), but if there's anyone out there who is trying and they're just losing hope...just hang in there,' he said. 'Try every avenue; try anything you can do, 'cause you'll get there. You'll end up with a family, and it's so worth it. It is the most "worth it" thing.'

What he should have said was "Don't wait or you'll end up in a world of hurt and, unlike us, most people can't afford to buy their way out of it."

God forbid they adopt instead of risking a retarded baby.

Because abortion it's No longer possible to adopt a healthy white middle or upper class baby. That's Why people don't adopt anymore and instead turn to draconian fertility treatments

They didn't adopt.

[–]gprime3125 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's my point.

Ah, I was lost there for a second.

Agreed. I mean, do what you want with your life... but don't be unrealistic about the fact that female fertility takes a really sharp nosedive after 35, and its peak is somewhere in one's early 20s.

Also, you won't necessarily "get there". Even some young people are infertile. Promising people that they'll "get there" if they try hard enough is... eeh, well-intentioned, but a lie.

On another site one of the comments is a woman getting defensive after someone pointed out Mrs. Fallon's age. She tried to prove him wrong by pointing out that she, too, is having fertility issues and is nearly 10 years younger than Mrs. Fallon. But that would put her at over 36, in which case age is still the issue here.

Naturally the people pointing out the age issue are being deemed mean and overly judgmental of "other people's family choices". If we were allowed to have an honest discussion about this so many people would be spared the heartache of not being able to conceive. It's so infuriating!

One thing to think about is that many couples are absolutely broke in their 20s, which is the best time to have children physically. It's a difficult choice. Have kids now when it'll be easiest biologically and eat dog food until your career takes off, or wait until you're financially stable and risk having issues conceiving?

I wish I could find the graph I saw a little while back that shows how the average age women are when they have their first child since the 1970s. It almost perfectly matches this one (the rise in Autism since the 70s).

[–]porcellus_ultor8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To be fair, many of the kids who are now placed on the autism spectrum were simply labelled as mentally retarded back in the '70's and '80's. There were a number of children at my elementary school back in the '80's that fell under the catch-all label of "retarded." It's not like we called them that maliciously; the teachers always told us that we had to treat Student X nicely and with special care because s/he was "mentally retarded." Looking back now, those kids were clearly autistic.

That makes a lot of sense to me that we'd be getting better at recognizing Autism for what it is. I did a little bit of reading not too long ago, though, after seeing a report about Autism on television. I had googled the topic and just began reading some of the stuff on the websites that came up, and watched a couple of videos. Some of it was expressed concern about how Autism is becoming more common. But, like you say, maybe that's just because they are just simply reporting more of the cases that were previously going unreported..

I think that the fertile ages have gotten younger in the last few decades due to the obesity epidemic and the epidemic of fast & highly processed foods taking over our diets.

I was reading one of the diet blogs by either Dr Eades or Dr. William Davis about how they had a lot of success with low carb high saturated fat diets in relation to fertility problems. Even losing weight gives a better chance.

When I was a kid, there were a lot of kids born late in life when the wife was considered past childbearing years. My husband was one of those.
