Most newbies will make improvements no matter what they do as long as they keep going to the gym and working out with enough intensity that they sweat. Rather than focusing on the most efficient way to gain muscle or lose fat, you should focus on figuring out a routine that you can stick to, and then make adjustments from there. Most people don't get the results they want because they quit after a month or two, not because they are eating sub-optimally.

Depending on your own personal exercise preferences and your individual biochemsitry, you will naturally favor either gaining muscle or losing fat. Both are favorable, so just take a step towards that direction first before worrying about the other side of the equation. For example, some people have a very difficult time eating less food, so it is far easier for them to gain muscle mass first, so they have a higher metabolism, before losing fat later. Other people can cut down on calories without much discomfort, and they can shed fat far easier than they can gain muscle. Do the easy thing first (it will pretty much automatically happen when you keep working out), because that will give you the quickest upgrade in physical attractiveness, and then do the harder part.

Do you want to gain weight or lose weight?

If you add calories, you gain weight, in both muscle and fat. Fat doesn't "turn into" muscle.

If you remove calories, you lose weight, in both muscle and fat (mostly fat if you do it safely).

If you're fat, losing fat will do way more for you looks than gaining some more muscle.

Check out r/keto or r/lowcarb. The tl;dr is cut out the sugar, bread, rice and potatoes, bump up the protein and fat.

The holy grail in fitness is body recomposition - losing fat while gaining muscle at the same time.

There seem to be only two cases where it is possible to do significant body recomposition:

When you're significantly overweight
When you're taking anabolic steroids/insulin/HGH or other performance enhancing drugs that cause your body to prioritize building muscle at the expense of fat storage.

So the good news is that you can probably successfully do some body recomposition. I would eat a reasonable diet for your height - no need to cut back to 1500 calories/day or anything extreme like that. A reasonable amount of food will give your body the building blocks it needs to build muscle. (And no, fat will not "turn into" muscle.)

At the same time, you shouldn't "pound calories". It is important to reduce your level of fat since fat seems to have some self-reinforcing mechanisms - it affects your testosterone/estrogen balance as well as your insulin sensitivity. Losing the fat will raise your testosterone levels naturally which will help your body prioritize building muscle.

Nope, in the beginning it will be enough to increase protein. lifting 2-3 times per week, low intensity steady training on off days.

No, your fat will not turn into muscle.

If you feel you already have a LOT of excess fat you should probably go on a caloric deficit "cut" to lose the fat until you have a proper base, and then you can start a slight caloric surplus while you lift weights. This is so when you have a decent muscle mass built up you have less fat to lose during the "cut".

When you lose fat, you also lose a little bit of muscle due to the caloric deficit. So making sure you gain the least fat per pound of muscle during the "bulk" is key. So you don't have to diet and burn fat for so long and maintain more of what you built up.

Caloric surplus doesn't mean 2000 calories above your maintenance, or you will just get even fatter.

If you mix cardio with lifting as the other person suggested, you need to weigh the calories burned in the cardio against the caloric intake to make sure you're in surplus, so if you burn 300 in cardio, eat something with 300 cals(this is during bulking, during cut cardio of course is invaluable).

Look up IIFYM(if it fits your macros) calculate your protein/fat/carbs/cals needed for your height/weight/age/activity level, if you cut eat under the cals, if you bulk eat over.

Browse the bodybuilding forums as all the info on that site is invaluable. This is very simple stuff, you should do your research before you start.

Look up cutting and bulking, exercise routines for beginners, maybe look up starting strength, even starting strength on a cut(never tried), intermittent fasting, IIFYM. Once you have a solid base of strength you can design your own routines.
