Is there a reliable way to create metrics on attitude, consistency with goals and general mindset?

There are quantitative and qualitative measures. A metric is quantitative. Your emotional affect is qualitative. So at first blush it does not appear you can quantify "mindset."

However, others have identified a very reliable metric that gauges your progress: The frequency of unprompted blowjobs.

You may want to look at /r/quantifiedself. For attitude there are a few approaches that can range from subjective ratings (think: the pain scale where you choose a smiley face that you feel matches your immediate state) to structured questionnaires (like the ones used to screen for mood disorders etc).

I personally have my phone scheduled to pop up an end-of-day review questionnaire to record my behaviors etc.

You can have a alarm go off at random intervals during the day and stop to take note of how you are feeling and what you are doing. The random nature of it will make sure you are taking essentially random samples.

A good read here is Steven Coveys 7 habits of highly successful people.

The first step is to begin with the end in mind. I write down my goal, and when it's due by. Then I fill in what needs to be done to get there. A small notebook is always a good place to keep it, plus the act of writing it down goes along way to commitment. In sales management we ask people what target they will commit too, then ask them to write it down. It takes it from the abstract to the concrete.

Slightly academic answer. Was reading some stuff on CBT a while ago. Psychologists treating, say, someone who was in a serious car accident and having PTSD symptoms will measure progress by making a statement (like "It's just a matter of time before I get hit by a car again", or "I feel anxious every time I see a red car in the street") and then ask you to rate how much you agree with that statement on a scale of 0-100%. They will ask the same question every week and see how the numbers move. Clearly, there's a significant subjective aspect to this, but then again, what you're trying to measure is in fact the subjectivity of the patient, so that's probably fine.

There's something to it, though. Back in my darkest days I started keeping a journal. Re-reading it much later, I simply couldn't relate any more, or feel any agreement with the sentiments I had written down. So if I had wrotten down some of the negative feelings I had and used them as "test statements", I guess they would have gone from 100% down close to 0% over time.

Is it pointless? Well, given an hour of your time, you want to spend a lot more of that hour actually improving yourself than asking yourself whether you're improving or not.
