I agree with the article, but with some reservations...that is, I agree that the idea of "balance" as our society imagines it is impossible. And I agree that raising children is a tremendously challenging, rewarding job, far more rewarding than almost any other!

I guess I wish the author had made some practical suggestions about how to improve things. I mean, for many families it is just not possible to get by on a single income. Blue collar jobs are being outsourced and ultimately replaces by machines. Salaries are dropping. White collar jobs take years and years of expensive education to achieve, leaving families in debt. There is more and more competition for jobs. At least in metro areas, I don't think we can just turn back the clock to a time when men worked and women stayed home running the household. I think there's got to be some new path...like maybe more flex-time work, or telecommuting. I don't know. Curious what others think!

I agree that in the current economic situation there are a lot of families who simply can not live on one income. And you totally hit the nail on the head about white color jobs and debt.

But at the same time, there are families that could - it would just require more sacrifice and long term planning. I'll use myself as an example. I'm a privileged white chick, I live in an area where cost of living is pretty low, and my husband makes 6 figures. Many of my friends are in the same situation. But, because my H and I spent the last few years throwing more money at our student loans than at anything else in our life we are now able to live on his salary alone and I can quit my job to raise our kiddo while still having mortgage/car debt. I've heard many friends say "Oh, I wish I could stay home and raise kiddo". But they didn't plan - they didn't think about that 4-5 years ago the way we did. We put this plan in motion years ago so we knew we could. There is a lack of long term planning with young adults today. So my H and I didn't take large vacations, we didn't buy a 300k new build house, we skipped the $200 bar tab on a Friday night and put it toward our future. We were thinking about the end game.

I think there's got to be some new path...like maybe more flex-time work or telecommuting.

Look at the tech industry. Supply and demand with the current work force require the employer to offer really enticing benefits packages in order to secure the best talent. Other industries are failing in that way. Employers are not offering what today's workforce wants - balance. And, like you mentioned, many jobs are being automated - or simply over loading the human work force and requiring them to do the job of 1.5-2 people and then the employee is totally worn out and burnt out.

Yes! I agree 100 percent about the importance of planning. In some cases, that might mean living frugally and paying down debt aggressively before babies are born...in other cases it might mean getting creative about finding work the mother can do from home.

I think a lot of people don't plan to have the mother at home because our society doesn't find that important. So a lot of people are discouraged from the get-go. I think more people should write about the real logistics of how to make it happen!

Agreed with everything you just said :)

There is a lack of long term planning with young adults today.

Yes! And the only planning that does happen is centered around career paths and bucket list type things like "see the olympics live" or "ride an elephant in India". People aren't planning for families and their day to day future lifestyle. People don't even seem to understand that these things should be planned for. It's assumed that those things somehow just happen.

I enjoyed her post as an exploration on the subject and don't mind that she didn't give more specific steps. But you're right there should be more information out there for women who do want to know everything you're asking. It's not easy for women to find realistic pathways to a more traditional lifestyle and there aren't as many incentives for them to even try.

At least in metro areas, I don't think we can just turn back the clock to a time when men worked and women stayed home running the household.

We definitely can't turn back the clock but even in the past women were active in their community - paid or volunteering - and others held part time or less demanding roles. I do think it is possible for the female sphere to come back, and for women to seek fulfillment and status within their community instead of in the male workforce. Flex time and tele-commuting can definitely be part of this solution, but I personally don't see things truly turning around without the existence of strong communities.

I will go after the job I wanted once my kids are in school. (Mandatory from 8:00- 16:00 + Homework AG) It is purely for my own financial security. I got the money state gives as "Kindergeld" as a nest egg for the time I retire. I expect my SO to support me during the time I get the qualifications - as I did it for him.
