Don't you love how diamonds became a must buy and women feel as if they are entitled to such a squandering of money for a useless rock they will put on their finger.

De Beer's Diamond Marketing campaign starting in the 50's revolutionized advertising. They literally created the desire for diamonds out of thin air. They also aggressively cornered and control the diamond mining of the world, purposely held back the supply to create an artificial price. If it were correct, diamonds are not actually that valuable.

I think this explains it pretty well. The woman seems to not know the reason that he did not wish to buy her a ring though. Maybe some communication is in need here.

I heard somewhere that there are whole asteroids actually made of the stuff

We can even artificially make diamonds at a fraction of cost. But nooooo, since some poor miner in South Africa didn't die to dig it out, it's not a symbol of love.

I just posted the article because of the title. When I first read the article I didnt know it was a dear abby advice column, I expected some white knight trash. I was surprised at the answer.
By the woman's own account her husband has been a nice guy, a good provider etc. But because he doesnt buy her a diamond ring he doesnt care about her.
Probably if the husband had been screwing around, drinking with his buddies and treating her like shit she would be a lot happier.

Yes. Diamonds are minerals. I don't know why I thought this was hilarious maybe thinking of the self entitled woman reading with a look of shock that someone was disagreeing with her.

"Jesus Christ Marie! They're minerals!"

I think the second letter is much more interesting. The divorced woman is probably an alpha widow who never got over her alpha fucks. The love of her life just died.

I would be upset if an ex died.

Depends on the ex.

Wow, this lady is batshit crazy. "I wouldn't change anything, except I never had an engagement ring....He has been financially helpful to our children and is generous to charity." But then "But when it comes to this, it's becoming clear that he thinks I am just not worth it. I feel unloved and deeply hurt. It seems my needs always come last, and this is just one more." So you wouldn't change anything, he is apparently a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather, but because he realizes the ROCK isn't worth it--not you!--you still feel "he thinks I am just not worth it. I feel unloved and deeply hurt. It seems my needs always come last." PATHETIC that she projects herself onto a rock. He obviously loves her and yet she throws it all away because he won't buy her a rock.

A woman's batshit crazy is different from a man's batshit crazy.
As the geeat general himself once said.
Napoleon once said, "All men are enamored of decorations . . . they positively hunger for them." So by developing the Napoleonic system -- the medal business -- the government learned it could get soldiers for less money, because the boys liked to be decorated. Until the Civil War there were no medals.

That headline, sheesh.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can't even fathom the crazy levels of entitlement and privilege required to list a diamond ring as one of your needs.

I have hinted to him over the last few years, left jewelry store catalogs and enlisted my sister-in-law to tell him.
Because we all know how good men are at picking up on these "obvious hints."

My wife did also. We also took all our old gold and repurposed it for both our wedding rings.

You've just given me a another reason to buy a few gold ingots. I personally am fine with a tungsten band.
[–]Sturmgeist781 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Why the fuck would an ALREADY married woman need an engagement ring?
Entitlement much?

I have never heard of a woman doing that.
That is fucking scary. The ring is supposed to be a symbol of love, for some women it's a symbol of power.
Even before TRP, I've been a lifelong asshole. Hypothetically if I ever got a girl a ring and she bitched about it I'd tell her to shut her fucking mouth and get piss off.

Care to tell? People can say what they want about MGTOW but it makes sense. Marriage scares the shit out of me.
This is the conclusion I've come to. I'm fine with a tungsten band for myself. If I ever met a woman I cared to marry I'd propose with a simple ring and use my mother's ring for the ceremony. I'd get a gold ring made for her later on.
This is just another reason for me to start saving/collection silver & gold.
